During my week’s stay at La Siranda casa-hotel I finally found that unique combination of informal and tranquil elegance and superlatively modern comfort and service, which has proved so elusive during my extensive travelling around the north and South American continents.
Each of the five luxurious bedroom suites at La Siranda looks out onto the lush and colonial inner-courtyard and every one of them is individually and exquisitely decorated and furnished.
Swiss cotton sheets, wi-fi, cable television, crafted furniture and superb bathrooms, together with thick adobe walls, high and traditionally wooden-beamed ceilings all help create that intoxicating and quintessential blend of modern and colonial Mexico that pervades each nook, cranny and tiny corner of this delightful hotel.
It’s not just the bedroom-suites at La Siranda that exude such a powerfully unique charm. I would have been content to stay and read my Carlos Fuentes novel (Los hijos del conquistador) in the bright and livresque reception room at the front of the house, but when I saw the patio overlooking the first of the gardens and the natural spring, gently trickling through the rocks (which proved such a mesmerising attraction to the many humming-birds that frequent the hotel’s courtyard and grounds), I knew I’d found the ideal environment for devouring a good book, drinking a night cap or simply relishing the peaceful surroundings.
Mounting a few steps one enters another enchanting walled-garden, formerly part of the local convent’s orchards. With such serenity, it’s hard to imagine that La Siranda is just a stone’s throw from the hubbub of the colourful and lively plaza grande. Behind the patio, to which the dining room looks on, a delicious array of Mexican dishes are served, ample in proportion, but which at the same time all possess a flair and finesse that can only be described as European-inspired.
The staff at La Siranda also warrants a mention. Friendly and always eager to help, they provide consummate professionalism with genuine warm-hearted Mexican hospitality. Whether it’s business or pleasure that brings you to Patzcuaro, La Siranda is an excellent place to relax, plan one’s activities or gently unwind.
