I have visited the mountain region of Guanajuato several times, and my trip to Dolores Hidalgo in May 2007 was a great trip to remember! I flew into Leon, GTO (airport code BJX) and stayed at El Relicario Hotel in Dolores. It's within walking distance of downtown, shoping and restaurants. Plus, you're ina real Mexican town full of real people. The locals are friendly and appreciate it if you try to communicate. I've attached a few photos of the hotel, which ran about $30 a night for a standard room with nice bathroom and king-size bed.
Dolores Hidalgo is 20 minutes away from San Miguel de Allenda, GTO., which is a cultural center for many American and Canadians. But stay in Dolores and save about $75 a night!
Dolores is the pottery making mecca of Mexico, where they make the ceramic and send to the coast for touristas!
