“Lovely hotel, but avoid the restaurant at all costs.”

La Ceiba is situated around beautiful lush tropical gardens, neatly tended. There is a sparkling swimming pool with tables & chairs and sun-loungers around it. Reception and housekeeping staff were quite friendly & helpful. Our room was spacious and clean, and the bathroom was clean with adequate hot water. The first night there, we ate at the restaurant - we ordered the pollo chiapanesco, and the bistek de res mexicana. These dishes were served without any of the usual accompaniments - salsas, tortillas, etc - just plonked on the table with nothing else but a neanderthal grunt.. When travelling, we generally order different dishes and sample eash other's meal,so both can benefit from the different flavours. When we ate the chicken, we found that although it was cooked, it was cold inside, indicating that it had been cooked, then put aside for an unknown amount of time, then partially and inadequately reheated prior to serving. As a result next morning we both had food poisoning. Be careful too when ordering drinks at the restaurant - the waiters make up the price as they go, putting a few extra pesos onto the price for some pocket money for themselves - they don't supply a written cuenta for drinks. These also come without the customary accompaniments, like limes, peanuts etc. There are plenty of other good restaurants within 5 minutes' walk from the hotel - but check first - some of them seem to close surprisingly early.

“OK hotel close to Sumidero Canyon”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2011

Chiapa de Corzo is a charming small town and La Ceiba is 100 m from the main square in a quiet residential district.. The hotel has a pleasant garden and a small pool. The staff are friendly and helpful and there is free wi-fi in the lobby. On site restaurant – arrived too late for dinner, but breakfast was good. We stayed in the main block where the rooms are adequate, but a bit dated and in need of a bit of TLC, but clean with good (and hot) water supply. Mosquito screens and aircon provided. The rooms in the block at the rear look a little more modern.
Very convenient for the landing stage for boats up the Sumidero Canyon

“Excellent quality/price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2011

We found the hotel by chance, although choice is quite limited in Chiapa de Corzo. This is an excellent choice if your visiting the canyon and the city (walking distance to the embarcadero). The staff was very nice and accomodating.

“Charming colonial hotel with lush garden and small pool and WiFi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2010

The hotel is very romantic with colonial style architecture and a lush garden in the courtyard. You can sit outside your room on the open corridoor and relax with a view of the garden and pool. The WiFi is ok but didn't quite reach the room (had to sit outside). The sockets were two pin only so I couldn't plug in my laptop in any case! Price was $660 pesos ($55 usd) which was a little pricey for what you get.

“Options are limited”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2009

We spent one night in Chiapa de Corzo, at this hotel. There really isn’t much choice in town. We first looked at alternate accommodations, and found them “basic,” where we might have stayed if in our teens or twenties, for $30 a night or no. But for lodging for the middle classes or above, it has to be La Ceiba, for lack of options. The room was okay and clean but nothing special. Accommodations would probably be worth $45 if in Oaxaca, for example. Staff were cold and unresponsive, and in one case were simply untruthful to us. We asked about dinner options and were told that all other restaurants except theirs, close at 7 pm. We drove around and found several which were open much, much later. At check out time we advised the new desk person about having a word with the PM staff and that they ought to be up front with their guests. A shallow smile was the response. We did enjoy sitting around the pool at a bar table and sipping our own wine that evening upon arriving and before going out for dinner. And we enjoyed the hotel’s proximity to the downtown restaurants and sights….but there really aren’t any of the latter. The attraction of the town appears to be its proximity to the boat rides through the canyons. However, boats won’t depart until they have at least 10 passengers. We arrived after 8 at the docks, opening time, and were told we might have to wait up to 2 hours for others to fill the seats. We decided to do the drive through the canyons instead, and truly enjoyed it. For the drive to the canyon lookouts you have to backtrack to Tuxtla, and I believe similarly to the zoo which is apparently worth a stop. Your options are to do what we did, or spend the night in Tuxtla, which we were not interested in doing being of its size and industrialization / commercialization. But on a future trip we would probably use a third option: leave Oaxaca earlier in the morning, take in the zoo and canyons by drive, and then pass right by Chiapa de Corzo to San Cristóbal. However, the way we did do it wasn’t all that bad except we overpaid for a middle-of-the-road hotel. But within the scheme of things, that’s not all that bad. Just don’t have high expectations for the place, and you’ll be fine. Spending perhaps $20 - $25 more than “the value” of accommodations must be looked at within the context of options available, realizing that your choices are limited. Owners of this hotel must therefore realize that they’re the only decent option in town, and hence they offer what they do, and nothing more.

  • Liked — plesant courtyard surroundings with lush plants and pool
  • Disliked — the staff
