We've just had the pleasure of staying at the Ajijic Suites for 7 nights. We found it to be very quiet, clean, comfortable and convenient to everything:the lake, the road to the airport and Guadlajara, the central plaza, shopping, hiking, etc. The suites are centered around a courtyard with a pleasant fountain, that includes a table and chairs for alfresco dining. The kitchens are small but inclusive of everything you need for breakfast and/or simple lunches or dinners. There's also a large grocery store called Super Lake nearby that has American-style groceries in case you tire of Mexican food or the less-than-stellar restaurants in Ajijic.
Luis and Elaine, the proprietors are both very friendly and helpful. Luis will pick you up at the airport or drive you into Guadalajara for a fee if you decide you don't want to take the bus or rent a car. Elaine is very well-informed about local sights; she gave us a great recommendation for a spa (balneario) where we spent two enjoyable afternoons. If she doesn't have a resource to recommend in answer to your questions, she's more than willing to call her network of colleagues to find the answer for you.
I was traveling with my husband, but many of the guests were single women. All of them told me they felt completely safe at the Ajijic Suites. The atmosphere is very congenial; you won't feel alone there if you're traveling by yourself. Best of all, the prices are very reasonable: between $50 and $75 depending on which suite you choose and the exchange rate.
