“A place to be discovered!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2011

First of all, once again, I'd like to say I'm not perfectly bilingual, so I'll do the best I can to write this review in English!

My boyfriend and I stayed at the "Cap-aux-Pierres Hotel" for 2 nights, in August 2011.

It was my first time in the Charlevoix area, but not for him! Sincerely, Charlevoix is a unique and wonderfull area in our nice Québec province. A place you MUST see at least once in your life! The landscape is breath-taking, the St-Lawrence river is spectacular, almost the sea, and you can see as much mountains, than water... WOW!

There's many little villages to see on the road, many panoramic stops, many beaches, and you may choose between following the "Route du Fleuve" (Road of St-Lawrence River), the "Route des Montagnes" (Mountains Road) and if you want to go a bit further towards whale watching in Tadoussac (Côte-Nord-Manicouagan area), there's also there the "Route des Baleines" (Whales Road)... Charlevoix is a nice place for agrotourism, outdoor sports (boat, kayak, walks in the mountains, bicycling...), whale watching and local art and culture. A place to relax, enjoy wonderfull landscape and discover the area by many activities offered.

About the "Cap-aux-Pierres Hotel-Motel"... Taking a 15 minutes boat ride (with your car) from St-Joseph-de-la-Rive to Île-aux-Coudres (were the hotel is) and then about 10 minutes driving through the island, enjoying the view, you will arrive to the hotel.
We were not disappointed at all; didn't know what to expect after looking at their internet site, but the price was interesting and since we booked the day before we left, there was not much availability in the hotels of the area... Hotel Cap-aux-Pierres is in front of the St-Lawrence river, so just for the view, it's worth it! The hotel is very clean, cosy and cordial! Nice gardens facing the River, chairs to realax while enjoying the view, an indoor and outdoor pool, many activities on the site (outdoor fire place, kids place, pool table, mini golf court, tennis court...). Very nice place!

This hotel has a hotel section and a motel section... can't talk about the hotel section because we stayed in the other one! The motel is ok: clean, comfortable but a little bit noisy (we can sometimes hear the neighboors, the cars...) but it's not too bad!! No conditionned air and no hair dryer in the rooms... I will know for next time!!!

The hotel offers breakfeast (buffet), dinners and suppers (à la carte); we only ate breakfeast there, and it was ok; bacon, eggs, pancakes, potatoes, sausages, fruits, cheese, toasts.... all you can eat for about 15$ (with taxe) per person. For dinner and supper, we ate elsewhere, so I can't talk about it.

The staff: at the front desk we didn't find the staff particularly friendly or cordial... the did their job, that's it! We found one waitress at breakfeast sympathetic among the 4-5 of them who served us coffee, drinks... But I guess the lack of sympathy is kinda common in the area, beause we found that other people act that way in groceries, "dépanneur", local stores... that was disappointing... after all, they make a bit of a difference in their tourist area... and theres maaaaannnnyyyy tourists there during summer! Forgetting that aspect, our stay in Hotel Cap-aux-Pierres was worth it... worth the price and the localization!!!! We would go back anytime and we recommand it without hesitation!

Enjoy your stay and enjoy Charlevoix!!!!

Don't hesitate to write back if you have any other questions!!!!!

Room Tip: If possible ask for a room with view on the St-Lawrence River!

“Not friendly towards English speakers”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2010

During two weeks of travel in Quebec Province with my wife and two children, I encountered several instances of petty dishonesty. I've never experienced anything like this in the English-speaking parts of Canada, so it seems as though the explanation must be either a French/English cultural difference, or a manifestation of the hostility that some French Canadians feel towards English speakers.

I have some difficulty assigning a rating to the Cap Aux Pierres hotel. The hotel accommodations themselves were adequate, but the behavior of restaurant staff (the restaurant is under the same management) was sub-par. When inquiring about breakfast at the restaurant, we were shown a price of $9.50 CAD per person. After we had eaten the meal, it turned out that this price was a "mistake", and we were charged $13.50 CAD per person. During the meal, the waitress frequently visited tables of French speakers to refill coffee cups and water glasses, but consistently avoided our table until I was rose and politely requested service. The same waitress then managed to spill juice on our table and on one of us, but neither apologized nor wiped up the mess.

“Beautiful setting on island in St. Lawrence River”

The rooms here were perfectly ordinary, but the island itself is beautiful, and peaceful, and the restaurant was extraordinary. Dinner was delicious.

“Mixed Review”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2005

Our family of five stayed here for two days in August of 2005. We stayed in the motel section which we were told had larger rooms. Our room was somewhat cramped and musty. The bathroom was very small with fixtures out of the 1950's. There were two swimming pools, tennis courts, mini golf, croquet, and an indoor game room with pool, ping pong, and other games. These facilities were still useable but are on the verge of deterioration. We enjoyed them immensely.

Some of the employees were very pleasant, others were indifferent, bordering on rude. The grounds overlook the south shore of the island and the St. Lawrence River. This vista is very scenic. The dining room turned out gourmet meals with a four course meal in the evening, including a mouth watering dessert. The breakfast buffet was also quite good and complete. The total cost for the five of us was $610.00 U.S. including taxes, some of which were refunded at the border on the way back. It was not a bargain, but not a total rip-off either. This was the type of resort I was looking for. But it was not a perfect fit.
