“Okay for a stopover”

Stopped for one night while touring the Cabot Trail. Out of all the hotels we'd stayed at during our east coast trip...this one was the most expensive for what you got. Breakfast was not included.
We were in the 2 storey part and I must say the view from the outside corridor balcony facing the water was awesome....especially the sunset. Beautiful!
There is a restaurant there but we opted to walk to the Tim Horton's for breakfast, just down the road .

“enoyable stay”

Came with a tour group. Rooms clean and comfortable. Area fun to tour and restaurants offered varied tasty menus. Breakfast at Lauries very good -actually had linen napkins and the feel of old time resorts. Enjoyed a laid back tour of a place that is tourist/fishing villlage atmosphere. It offerered small hotel ammenities such as computer access, local knowledge and info, laundrey and a friendliness I really enjoyed. The hometown entertainment of acadian music and lore one evening in lounge was something I felt added alot to my knowledge and enjoyment of Cheticamp.

“An exceptional experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2010

We travel to Cape Breton once or twice a year - every time we stop at Laurie's Motor Inn I am always amazed at the improvements and upgrades that are constantly happening at this location. They just never stop. They should get an award on their property maintenance. And it is spotlessly clean.

Canada is working hard to create "experiences" for travellers - staying at Laurie's is an experiential experience.

The cuisine is excellent, the staff warm, friendly and provide exceptional service. Scallops on our first evening were cooked to perfection and on the second evening i tried an Acadian Dish - Meat Pie - it was delicious! The Breakfast Buffet is excellent value -and the breakfast menu allows many choices - we couldn't resist the scrumptious and plentiful buffet - eggs, bacon, french toast, pancakes, home fried potatoes in addition to porridge, cereal, juices. The plates we noted going to nearby tables where guests had ordered from the menu looked very appealing and mouth-watering. The fresh daily dinner biscuits as well as the cinnamon rolls and oatcakes at breakfast are baked on the premises . Oatcakes are a Cape Breton specialty - Laurie's has the best!.

The hotel is pet-friendly and our room was comfortably decorated - all the rooms are spacious with large bathrooms. Newly decorated rooms have beautiful floating hardwood floors and real wood furniture - well appointed with attractive pictures, mirrors, spacious closet space. They are constantly upgrading both interior and exterior . It's astounding.

While there we noted that the Guest Laundry has great facilities and cloths are supplied to wash your car or motorbike. - where else can you get that service?

To top it all off - there is often entertainment in a very large lounge above the dining room
Acadian music abounds in Cape Breton - the entertainer interpeted the songs, the acadian origins, the links with Louisianna and France. It was a combination of story telling, Acadian music with a bit of John Denver and Ian Tyson thrown in for good measure.

The staff are a wealth of knowledge of what to see and do while in Cheticamp which enriches the stay and acknowledges the community.

We met people from all over North America (they come from all over the world) who were overcome with the beauty of the area and the genuineness of the experience at Laurie's.

“OVER CHARGED / REFUSED TO HELP”

Great location , view was nice , service was average , was clean . We were quoted a price of below $ 90.00 plus tax . Was charged $ 145.00 tax in . Called to ask why , was told to call back and talk with the owner , Laurie . Did this the next day , was told he had a note from his staff that I called earlier " Bit$%$%$ " about the price of the room .Was only reporting what happened at this point . Bottom line , refused to help in any way , got upset with me because I complained . Owner needs conflict resolution training as this was not about the money , it is about trust , integrity and honesty . I did not even look at the price when I gave my credit card , I totally trusted that the Quoted price would apply . I feel taken advantage of . ( Sorry for the rant but I want people to know what happens when you trust strangers that only see things their way )

“Underwhelmed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2010

My average rating is generous. I would give Laurie's a 2.5 .
We stayed at Laurie's as part of a tour of Nova Scotia and PEI. Of all of the places we stayed, this was the most unsatisfying. The rooms are large, fairly clean and have free wireless internet that worked every time we signed on. The property had a nice view of the water. The shower was hot and had a good flow. Those were the pluses.
The cons: the furnishings, appointments and decorations in the rooms were very dated and faded. The word cheap comes to mind. There were no nice touches. It felt cheap.
The restaurant was cozy but the food only fair. Most of our group found the dinner entrees overcooked. The desserts were pretty good, all homemade. The servers in the dining room were all very friendly. Breakfast was okay, but no fresh fruit at all. All carbs except the scrambled eggs which were not good.
Cheticamp is a good location for exploring the Cabot Trail. It's a neat French fishing village with lots of Acadian culture.
Overall, I think Laurie could freshen up the rooms and add a few nice touches to make it feel more comfy.
