“Overpriced and disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

My husband and I stayed at this property recently and it is way overpriced for the quality. Very old and basic - needs a facelift. Not even an iron and ironing board in the room. Most hotels provide some toiletries - this hotel gave one small bottle of shampoo - that's it and limited bath linens. Nothing special about the rooms. Overpriced and disappointing. Will not return. There are better accommodations in the area.

“Utilitarian 70's-style motor lodge”

There's nothing wrong with "serviceable" and that's just what Laurie's is: no more, no less. Unfortunately, their advertising (and prices, which I'm beginning to understand are normal in three-season Cape Breton) suggests a far more interesting or comfortable place. We paid premium for a "harbor view," which also included a view of the parking lot, a front building, the street and other buildings, and finally, a sad-looking industrial set of docks, which pretty much ddescribes all of Cheticamp. The people were nice and the night clerk let us use the office microwave (as we couldn't find a decent meal in the area) but maybe calling it an "oceanfront" motel is stretching things a bit. IT doesn't look like its pictures but more like the ones I've included.

“Stay somewhere else.”

Cheticamp is great but the service and value of Laurie's is not. When we checked in the attendent made us feel like we were seriously inconveniencing her. One of our party rented the 109 per night room but had to upgrade to the 149 per night room because the first room was so bad. And the 149 per night rooms were not a lot better Then another of our party accidentally locked her key in the room and had to call the manager after hours. She felt terrible and apologized profusely. All she got back was a grunt and a nasty look. Find somewhere else to stay. These people could care less.

“Very nice spot.”

A lovely facility, somewhat dated but very well maintained and clean. Free wi-fi in the rooms.
An excellent restaurant on site. The staff is excellent and very friendly, as are all the folks of Cape Breton.

“Basic”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2011

A large hotel, including different buildings. We asked for a room with view and got a room on the second floor, with a view of the harbor. This meant having to use a steep staircase, but was worth it.
The room was OK, but whoever equipped the rooms, did not think some travellers enjoy reading in bed at night. So the reading lamp (one only, between beds) was covered with a heavy black lampshade. Reading was exteremely difficult.
The same planner/decorator decided that we do not have many toiletries, so the space was limited (this relates to many hotel rooms all over the world).
