We stayed at the Compass Rose for two nights. Grand Manan is a very interesting island - with a population consisting almost entirely of fisherman. You won't find any luxury yachts in any of their harbours. It's a chance to see NB life as it really is - without all the touristy glitz. And the Compass Rose is a wonderful place to see it from. Located very close to the ferry terminal, it is right on the shore - and from the deck you can watch the fishing boats come in in the evening. The breakfast (on the "lighter" side) was tasty and the breakfast room is georgeous. It was extremely clean and beautifully decorated - a very charming place.
A two-minute walk from the CR you will find Adventure High - a kayak/bike rental and adventure company. Renting a bike is a great way to see the island and it's many lighthouses. We cycled out the Whistle Road and watched whales from the point. We also rented kayaks from AH and joined a sunset tour. This was fun and the scenery was amazing, but they DO NOT provide spray skirts!! So we got soaked and that wasn't fun.
Other than that our stay on Grand Manan was wonderful.
