“Avoid staying at the Compass Rose B&B”

I'm debating about whether to classify Ed Parker (Compass Rose owner) as witless or clueless. Rather than choose, let me give a concrete example of each so that you can be the judge. Witless: One of the most common reasons to go to Grand Manan is whale-watching. The morning excursion leaves at 8:00 AM. Given the short travel distance, it is convenient to start breakfast about 7:00 AM. While this is not particularly early, Ed obviously considers it a real burden. That is OK I guess, but one might expect a normal breakfast minus any hot items (such as eggs or pancakes). But no. If you have breakfast "early", you are left one very small cup of coffee, dry cereal, and a small roll or muffin. No fruit, no yogurt, no bread, no second small cup of coffee. The Parkers obviously save money here, because what they provide for breakfast could not cost over $1 (benefit of the doubt). Clueless: There is supposed to be "free WiFi", which they secure via a password given to guests. We discovered that our computer could not connect, and asked Ed why. Well, Ed explains, "we turn the WiFi off about 10:00 every night". This is something of an overachievement. We calculate that Ed may save up to one cent of electricity if he keeps this up for an entire year.

We omit consideration of Ed's surly attitude, his misrepresentation of the room as having a "private bath" (private only if you consider getting dressed to go across the hall "private"), and more.

We were in Canada for over a month. We stayed in B&Bs in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. With the single exception of the Compass Rose, we found the B&Bs to be delightfully wonderful.

Bottom Line: Avoid the Compass Rose. Just select a different B&B, and enjoy yourself.

  • Liked — Location near the whale-watching excursion boats.
  • Disliked — Compass Rose is an unacceptable dump, operated by incompetent rude owners.

“Most Charming Dining Room I've Ever Seen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2008

The Compass Rose is a lovely little place near the wharf in Grand Manan. The inn consists of two houses next to each other. We stayed in the second house. It was very clean, comfortable and nicely decorated with antiques. There was a small deck in back with chairs where you could sit and watch the fishing boats and ferries.

My favourite thing about the Compass Rose has to be the dining room, in the main house. It's decorated with shell art and sea glass and a lot of drawings and little watercolours of the house. It also overlooks the water and the wharf. And the food is great. They have the best brown bread I've ever tasted. And the staff is very friendly.

“Modern English Charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2005

We stayed at the Compass Rose for two nights. Grand Manan is a very interesting island - with a population consisting almost entirely of fisherman. You won't find any luxury yachts in any of their harbours. It's a chance to see NB life as it really is - without all the touristy glitz. And the Compass Rose is a wonderful place to see it from. Located very close to the ferry terminal, it is right on the shore - and from the deck you can watch the fishing boats come in in the evening. The breakfast (on the "lighter" side) was tasty and the breakfast room is georgeous. It was extremely clean and beautifully decorated - a very charming place.

A two-minute walk from the CR you will find Adventure High - a kayak/bike rental and adventure company. Renting a bike is a great way to see the island and it's many lighthouses. We cycled out the Whistle Road and watched whales from the point. We also rented kayaks from AH and joined a sunset tour. This was fun and the scenery was amazing, but they DO NOT provide spray skirts!! So we got soaked and that wasn't fun.

Other than that our stay on Grand Manan was wonderful.

“A Magical Place to Visit”

The Compass Rose is a charming B&B within walking distance of the ferry. It has water views of the harbor and Stanley Beach. The rooms are comfortable, nicely decorated, with excellent mattresses (!), and modern bathrooms. Flagg House has a small deck with Adirondack chairs overloking the water. A well prepared breakfast is included. Dinners are excellent, if pricey. The dining room is bright and airy with wonderful views.
