I'm debating about whether to classify Ed Parker (Compass Rose owner) as witless or clueless. Rather than choose, let me give a concrete example of each so that you can be the judge. Witless: One of the most common reasons to go to Grand Manan is whale-watching. The morning excursion leaves at 8:00 AM. Given the short travel distance, it is convenient to start breakfast about 7:00 AM. While this is not particularly early, Ed obviously considers it a real burden. That is OK I guess, but one might expect a normal breakfast minus any hot items (such as eggs or pancakes). But no. If you have breakfast "early", you are left one very small cup of coffee, dry cereal, and a small roll or muffin. No fruit, no yogurt, no bread, no second small cup of coffee. The Parkers obviously save money here, because what they provide for breakfast could not cost over $1 (benefit of the doubt). Clueless: There is supposed to be "free WiFi", which they secure via a password given to guests. We discovered that our computer could not connect, and asked Ed why. Well, Ed explains, "we turn the WiFi off about 10:00 every night". This is something of an overachievement. We calculate that Ed may save up to one cent of electricity if he keeps this up for an entire year.
We omit consideration of Ed's surly attitude, his misrepresentation of the room as having a "private bath" (private only if you consider getting dressed to go across the hall "private"), and more.
We were in Canada for over a month. We stayed in B&Bs in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. With the single exception of the Compass Rose, we found the B&Bs to be delightfully wonderful.
Bottom Line: Avoid the Compass Rose. Just select a different B&B, and enjoy yourself.
