“Good hotel, economical, historic, but not my style and could use update”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Here on business for a couple of nights. This is a historic hotel and those of you into quaint, historic hotels will probably love this place. I am not one of those people, however, and would prefer a more modern hotel.
The pluses are it is inexpensive, large tub, good sized rooms (although they are partly divided by a wall), great restaurants nearby, interior decor has nice historical feel, and breakfast is decent (but no hot items, like eggs, waffles, pancakes, etc)
Minuses are hard to find your room (the hotel layout isn't that organized, it is an old factory after all), in "bedroom" (partly divided off from main room) there is room for the bed and little else like luggage, shampoo packets are like ketchup packets (a bit too cheap), lots of repairs had been done to the tile in the bathroom and it looks very worn, treadmill didn't work, and the time window breakfast is offered is rather limited.
Some other things are it is in an old/historic part of town which may be safe but doesn't necessarily feel so. I agree with others this place has a very worn out feel and should be updated. If I ever come back to the area (I do like the area), I will request elsewhere but again history buffs may like this hotel a lot.

“A gem that could use a lot of polishing”

The Brookstown has a great location and is a fabulous historic building. The rooms could use a lot of work. Room decorations were so-so, the bed and bedding looked a little tired, and the water pressure in the shower was unimpressive--although the water was hot. The restaurant was closed. Forget the free breakfast buffet--go to Ollie's Bakery a short block away.

“Used to be great, needs an upgrade desparately”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

I used to stay here and loved this Inn. The big loft style rooms with exposed wood and brick are beautiful, but the Inn has really gone down hill lately. They definitely need a cosmetic upgrade. The rooms smell of mildew and are dusty. The bed sagged terribly in the middle. The gym has outdated equipment. The also started giving "ketchup packet" toiletries... FAIL! The staff are great unfortunately management needs to invest some money to upgrade this facility. Until that happens I will not be returning and I will be recommending our company remove from its list for the area.

Room Tip: Check the rooms for mildew and check the beds.

“Week end getaway in Winston Salem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Spent a great week end at this great old historic property. Loved the history and the proximity to Old Salem. The bed was in a loft walk up and was cozy. Downstairs was the sitting room with a fireplace. They had a complimentary breakfast that looked good but we walked to a nearby restaurant that boasts local eggs and produce. The staff was friendly and helpful. Would go back!

“It could be more!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

I stayed in a Queen Suite which was two levels. It had great 15' mill windows, but the bathroom seemed like the money ran out during the remodel and fixtures showed it. Two items which have to be addressed. First different size CFL globes over the mirror and my pet pev tear open shampoo. They hvae not been in the shower trying to open a package. The building is cool if you like old mills.
