The first thing you notice is that the building is all by itself. It is surrounded by roads on all sides, the noisiest one being I-40. Try to get a room on the side opposite I-40. There are gas stations and some fast food restaurants in all directons. I suggest you ask what you want at the desk first because they are spread out. The isolation made me worry about the safety of my car. The desk clerk said they have security cameras all around the building. He admitted there is no hired security service that patrols the lot. The building is old, but my room was fine. If you don't like a bed to be too soft (I do not), then this is a good chain for you. The next morning, the breakfast attendant was one of the best ever. So, like many hotels this one has its good and its bad points.

I have stayed at the HIE W.S. about 10 times in the last four years. The staff is what makes me always come back. Most recently though (and it could have been my room), I noticed that the property, especially the room, was beginning to look a little dated compared to other HIE properties I have stayed at. They always seem to be cooking something in the lobby for travelers, a nice touch.
Dunkin Doughnuts is across the street. Convenient to Rte 40. Wireless internet is not that strong throughout the property.

I guess just your typical place to bed down for a night or two.
Close to I-40.
Friendly and helpful staff.

Beds each had pillow choices. (firm & soft)
Ironing board, hair dryer, etc..

Last week I had to drive to Winston-Salem for a medical procedure and drove straight to the hospital and then started looking for a hotel. This HI Express is just a block away from Baptist Hospital. Night clerks were outstanding and made us feel safe and welcome. The room was extremely clean, and mattress, pillows and linens were of amazing quality. Furniture felt like Pottery Barn showroom. Not your typical hotel. Did not hear the traffic from I-40 and we were on the side facing the highway. Provided a shuttle to the hospital, saving parking time and expense. Would not hesitate to return and give it a high recommendation.
