The front desk clerk was talking on the phone and barely acknowledged my husband and me when we walked in. When she did hang up, she complained about the caller to me. She also complained about all the people checking in at the same time, as well as how cold it was in the lobby. All this complaining made me very uncomfortable as I did not know how to respond. Finally, we got our keys.
We walked into our room, disgusted to find the following problems: rust damage on the wall behind the door hinge, water damage on the ceiling, a piece of carpet cut out and replaced with a contrasting piece, wallpaper peeling off the wall, and the showerhead disconnecting from the wall. My husband went to the manager to ask that we be moved to a more suitable room and we were moved. It was an improvement, but still not worth the money- the drain stopper did not work, one electrical outlet did not function, the TV menu was stuck on Spanish (no matter what we did with the remote), there were no TV channel guides, and no paper and pen (which I would expect to find in even a 1-star hotel).
The cleaning crew did a very nice job keeping our room clean. They made our beds, gave us new towels and wash cloths, and vacuumed the sand out of the floor.
The continental breakfast was fine. Not a high quantity of food, but the variety within what was offered was satisfying. My husband and I are pretty easy to please when it come to breakfast, so we left satisfied with the breakfast.
To be honest, the only reason we stayed out our reservation was that, after 4-1/2 hours of driving, we no longer had the energy to shop around for another hotel. We were also afraid of our ability to afford one on such short notice. We will more than likely be returning to Wilmington on vacation in the future, but we will not be returning to this hotel. First impressions are important, and this hotel did not leave us with a very good one.
