My husband and I stayed at Camp Hatteras RV resort for eight nights ( June 10-18 2011) We reserved a beach front site and it was ready and waiting for us when we dragged in after a long drive from western New York. The price of the ocean front site was higher but well worth it for being close to beach, ( better to run back for ice, bathroom breaks etc)
The resort in located in a quieter part of the outer banks away from the kill devil frenzy, but yet all the comforts are close by. As we went in early June, we avoided the crowds of the high summer season, each day we noticed more folks checking in.
The staff was more then helpful, and were a perfect example of southern hospitality. We had some problems along the way ( ac broke and leaked water in RV and I locked us out with keys and cell phones inside) and with each catastrophe, they knew who to call, and offered us help and support along the way. ( we are sort of new to camping.....note to self, bring extra keys locksmiths can be pricey)
Despite us being novices, the resort was clean, quiet and family oriented. Our site was only a sand dune away from ocean and at night could hear the sound of waves as we drifted off to sleep. Loved the beach, bring an umbrella with tie downs or sand anchor as it is very windy and we did not use our awning for this reason. The wind is welcome as the temp.'s were 90's each day. A beach cart is also a handy item to carry chairs and cooler. As other's have mentioned bring your own drinking water.
Cable TV picture was great, and yes they do charge extra for this. Hey paradise ain't cheap, right? Restrooms very clean and maintained, pools were clean and refreshing. Our site came with a cement pad which cut down on the sand tracked in the RV. They sprayed each night for bugs, You can not have campfires here at your site, but folks had them on the beach nightly.
There are places near by to eat a casual meal out and DQ ( Dairy Queen) is a stone throw away if you want a treat. We shopped at Food Lion ( about 15 minutes away ) and we bought ice at the fishing store next door)
It is a long drive for us but we enjoyed this resort, the beautiful beach and the management aims to please. We will be returning next June.
