Staff accommodating, solid economical place to stay, close to WNC University and not too far to Ashville

I went to Sylva to take my son to Western Carolina for move in day for freshmen....I made my reservation at the Sylva Inn for 2 nights. I read the reviews before calling & decided to go ahead & stay there since the reviewed all seemed positive. When we were heading to our room, there was someone that had 3 dogs (2 of which were pit bulls) walking down the hallway. We were not told that this hotel is pet friendly. As we went walking down the hall, there were several rooms that had dogs that were barking & we could smell them through the doors. I would have never stayed there if I was told that they allowed animals to stay....so..I went downstairs to ask if I could have a new room on a different floor....They sent me to the 4th floor with no hassle.
OK....now the fun starts!!!! After spending the night I felt this itching sensation on my back. I looked in the mirror & it looked as though I had a bite mark....Well...I turned the sheets down & there were blood spots & a blood streak on the sheet...I couldn't imagine where in the world that came from...as I moved the pillow, there was a dead bed bug!!!!! OMG...I totally freaked out. I put it on top of a pen & took it downstairs & asked for the general manager...of course he/she wasn't there, so I showed the lady at the front desk & told her that I was checking out & I wanted a total refund for the 2 days that I was there. I showed her the bug & the bite mark on my back. She did not hesitate to give me my full refund. I will NEVER stay there again no matter how reasonable the price is. To beat it all...I even asked the person when making reservations if they ever had reports of having bed bugs..Of course they said no...but when searching after I got home, there were reports of bed bugs in the past. I have learned a valuable lesson to do more research before making a hotel reservation. We ended up staying at the Holiday Inn Express...it cost us more, but it's worth it not to have to worry about getting bit while you're sleeping.

Stayed here on 7/31/11. The gentleman at the front desk was very nice and helpful when it came to info on the surrounding area. The room was nice and clean. It was a great room for the price(around 68.00). They also had a continental breakfast. Just your usual coffee, muffins(tiny), waffles, cereal etc. Nothing big. But, surprisingly, the coffee was really good. The location is kind of inconvenient if you want to hang out in Downtown Sylva. It is located on the highway about 10 min from the town center. Just a tip-everything in the town of Sylva was closed when we arrived on Sunday. Everything except maybe 2 or three restaurants, if that. To sum it up,it was a great stay, great value and a great no frills hotel.

We stayed two nights during a trip through the Smokies and on the Blue Ridge Parkway.From the reviews we were not expecting luxury, but hoped for a clean friendly place away from the big "tourist trap" towns in the area. The property is obviously aging after being taken over from the Comfort Inn chain. We were there on a weekend, and I think the regular manager was off. The room was large, the bathroom especially so with nice counter top room to set toiletries etc., and the bed was comfortable. However greeting us just outside the front door each time we came in was an ashtray overflowing with cigarette butts, and sometimes people smoking that we had to walk around. On the cracked floor of the only elevator was a dirty,broken "Wet Floor" sign that lay in the corner for the whole two days we were there. The carpet in the room was kind of bubbled up. The staff was for the most part pleasant. The breakfast was adequate. The shampoo and lotions were very nice.
