We were willing to shell out some bigger bucks than we paid at hotels to "rough it" a bit on a Carolina trip. 4 adults stayed in Deluxe Kottage. We've camped before, so we know a cottage is not the Ritz, but for $120 a night, we propose a few upgrades.
Overall cleanliness of cottage was fine and front porch a pleasant place to relax. Basically, the kitchen was stocked with food prep hardware; however, it should be inspected after each tenant for the advertised "fully equipped." Our Kottage was lacking a decent can opener (the 2 in drawer were dull & circa 1950) and we could have used some starter paper towels and dish soap. If we were camping 'normal' style, we would have brought this stuff...but at rates we paid, some amenities ought to be thrown in.
Worst part was the beds. THINNEST mattresses ever! Additionally, we are tall folk, and my 6 ft.+ son slept in folded style on short bed. Again, we tent camp and have been to Scout/band facilities, so if WE are complaining...it's bad.
KOA needs to put real mattresses on the beds, not foam pads. Our kids gladly spent the second night in a relative's plush beach house, so my husband and I returned to our Kottage, stacked both mattresses on one bed, and slept comfortably.
We did not use the facilities of the campground as we visited Holden Beach. When we were on site, however, it was clean, secure, and quiet (mid-week). My kids said the pool and shower/bathroom facilities were sparkling. Nearby tent campers seemed to enjoy their stays.
