“Winter get away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We went with another couple for the w/e-the guys golfed twice and the girls shopped. Our rooms had a center sitting area between our bedrooms. We had wine and snacks before dinner in our sitting room, not sitting on someones's bed. Very nice!
All the amenities we wanted; friendly staff, comfortable beds, plenty of pillows.
Look forward to going back.
The hotel is old but very charming. It was certainly worth the price we paid.

“old, older and oldest”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

mid pines resort and golf club and pine needles. we thought we be a great weekend getaway. 2 rounds of golf each and 2 nites for $390 thru groupon. no no no, dont do it.
the hotel is very old and has no elevator, rooms go for about $100 a nite but are only worth $50. small,, very small, no heat control in room and the a/c control in room isn't much better i understand. dinning room with no one in it. looks like a ghost town. there were only 2 rooms filled that nite. and now the golf course. great lay out, condition of the course was good but the greens were terrible. a mess, bumpy and just not good at all.
folks this is no deal, stay at one of the newer hotels and play pine needels instead. owners need new marketing and pricing. looks like you walked into the 1940's. this is not elegant like pinehurst resort, just old and dated. and the internet is slow, slower and slowest

“Historic and Grand...But New Beds Are Extremely Hard and Uncomfortable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2011

Truly a unique, grand, old hotel that has been lovingly cared for...including fabulous redecorating, an awesome new game room and delightful staff. However, readers please take this warning seriously: the beds were the most uncomfortable mattresses I think I've ever slept on! We were so shocked because the room was obviously redecorated and the whole place is just magnificant. However, if you are there for golf and need to rest, be prepared to sleep on a piece on concrete. And, I inquired to a staff worker if the beds were all the same in every room, and he confirmed that they were. I am so sorry to be writing this, because otherwise the place is just terrific.

“what a classic golf resort & outstanding donald ross course”

we decided to stop in Pinerhurst enroute our return to Canada from Hilton Head on New Year's eve/2010. Drizzly/50 degree day...we stopped at Mid Pines for a bowl of chili and beer...good decision...the resort manager introduced himself and suggested we stay for their outstanding new years diinner & try out the classic Donald Ross desgn-course. We got a quick 9 in before dark; what an outstanding, classic design..... The room is classic 1920's...but nicely updated with king-size bed and LCD TV...the hotel dining area is a classic, and the bar and member's facilities are beautifuuly restored....outstandiing facility....great value this time of year...rooms and golf very reasonable. highly recommend

“Lots of ambience, but past its prime”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2008

The Georgian architecture of the Mid Pines Inn is initially impressive as one drives in, but upon getting closer to the hotel it becomes apparent that the hotel is in need of major renovations. The paint was peeling from the gutter, which looked in places like it could fall off and the slate roof sagged, suggesting structural issues. The carpet in the lobby is old, as it is throughout most of the hotel. The creaking floorboards are part of the charm, but the peeling paint on the stairway railings gave the old 1921 hotel a shabby first impression (there is no elevator). The rooms are small and dimly lit, and the bathrooms are tiny, but clean. The rooms are heated by radiators and there is no thermostat, so we had to open the windows at night (very refreshing). There was an old air-conditioning unit in our room which we used to cool off in the daytime, but the unit was visably full of dust through a hole in the top (although the output was not especially dusty, it did smell a bit musty). We ate in the dining room the first night, but it was empty except for one other couple. The bellboy had to go find a waitress for us, who said that she had not expected any diners because no one had made reservations! The food was very good, as it should have been for $73 (two people, no drinks). A player piano played Gershwin to the mostly empty dining room that seemed way past its prime. In fact, the ghosts of vacationers during the roaring 20's could easily be imagined in the room. It occurred to me that most country clubs that age had been torn down long ago and replaced by more modern structures. Many of the hotel staff were extremely nice and gave our stay a 'homey' feeling, despite the other disappointments. The maids were very efficient and overall the hotel seemed to be well-managed. The women's locker room/restroom area downstairs had been recently renovated, and it was by far the nicest place in the hotel. It's obvious that the hotel is struggling to stay afloat due to the ridiculous food prices ($12 for a turkey sandwich, $15 for a hamburger with chips & condiments). The grounds and golf course were impeccable and the location is magnificent. With a multi-million dollar face lift, this could be a first-rate property. For $160 per night (no food included), I had expected a little more, but it was a memorable experience, and not an unpleasant one. The photos of famous golfers from the hotel's heydays (Julius Boros, Jack Nicklaus, Chi Chi Rodriguiz) lined the hallway from the golf shop to the renovated bathroom facilities-- easily the most impressive part of the building.

  • Liked — The ambience of the location
  • Disliked — The run-down aspects of the hotel building
