“Keep driving!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2011

My children and sister were traveling together on vacation. It was late and we were tired. We stopped at this hotel, thinking it looked a bit better kept than the one across the street. Once we got into our rooms, it was a different story. You can see my sister's review in this thread. My room didn't look bad at first glance, but upon further inspection we found only 2 bath towels in the room, one had a brown stain on it. No wash cloths, no hand towels. The carpets and shower curtain were filthy. The air conditioner was unplugged, and when I went to plug it in, I noticed that the plug had scorch marks on it. As my son started to climb into bed, he noticed sesame seeds on the sheets. The next morning, I noticed an earwig in the bathtub.
I decided to complain upon checkout, but there was no one behind the desk. Just a sign saying to ring the bell if assistance is need, to which no one responded to. I also then notice a hand-written sign stating that there would be no refunds on rooms beyond the first 15 minutes of check-in. My sister said she did not see that when she checked in. I suspect it is only posted in the morning, when people are checking out. Had we seen that, we would have gone on down the road!

Room Tip: My tip to get the best room is to choose a different hotel!

Dear JJGlasgow,

Thank you for taking the time to share a review about our hotel. There is never an excuse for providing anything less and an excellent stay. I apologize about the lack of hand towels and wash cloths provided in the room. We have trained our housekeepers on providing an adequate number of towels in the room. These corrective measures should help improve the overall experience of our guests. I hope that you stay with us again or at another one of our Americas Best Value Inns located throughout the Country.

Sincerely,
Henna-Manager

“Awful”

O.K. the price was too good to be true, although my sister says their room is not as bad as mine. We are just passing through, late at night did not realize there was a lot more to choose from about a mile up the road. This might just be the worst hotel i have ever stayed in. The room is grungy, dirty ashtray, ripped up box spring, dirty finger prints around door, used bar of soap in bathroom, stained shower curtain, dust in air-conditioning vents, cracks and cob webs in ceiling, burn holes in bed spread, the fire alarm has been ripped out of ceiling and wires are hanging out, oh and i have to body slam the door to get it shut. I really wanted to like this place because it is very cheap and the woman at the front desk is so nice. The sheets are clean.

Room Tip: don't stop here.

“Stay away !!!!”

We were on our way to Virginia Beach and decided to stop in Smithfield. This was the first motel off 95 so that is where we stopped. We should have known to turn around just by the condition of the driveway into the parking lot. Check in was outside through a window. It was almost impossible to hear the desk clerk through this window. When we finally go the room we were all the way on the end. We got into the room and could not put the lights on. The light switches did not work. We had to get into the room and put on the bathroom light and the lights by the bed to get some light. There was also about a 2 inch gap between the bottom of the door and ground. Besides letting in outside light I am sure it let in all sorts of bugs from outside. The bathroom was disgusting....crumbling plaster, moldy shower curtain and moldy odor. The beds were uncomfortable and lumpy. The bedspread and blankets were stained. The carpets were dirty and stained. Outside our back window was all sorts of equipments....saw horses, bags of sand, big barrels, black tar like stuff, etc. This was not a good place to stay. Dirty and badly in need of a major renovation and cleaning. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Dear anitacaro,

Thank you for taking the time to share a review with us. I apologize for any inconvenience you experience you encountered during your stay regarding the outside equipment and room cleanliness. We were having some work done on our parking lot at the time. The workers were using the equipment. The equipment has since been removed. We have recently trained our housekeepers to improve the overall cleanliness of the rooms. We feel these corrective measures will help improve the overall experience for our future guests.

“really needs renovation”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2010

We stayed at the Howard Johnson's in Santee and thought this would be the same. It was not.
The price was very good; however, the room was sadly in need of renovation. It was clean but there was a moldy smell. All the furniture and bath fixtures were chipped.
Also, we could hear the people in the next room watching television.

“OK hotel on the way to Florida”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2009

This was the exit we decided to get off for the night on the way back from Florida. And it's the first hotel off the exit.

The room was very large and had a large screen TV on the wall. The bed was extremely comfortable for an I-95 motel. And was okay for the price. It's not the Ritz, but it's worth the price. Would stay there again if the need arose.

Only complaint was that I felt I was being watched by the manager as we were loading the car.
