“If you are looking for a luxurious oasis look elsewhere”

This hotel is unfortunately the best of a bad bunch in Derby. It's tired and in need of a manor refurb, but there is no alternative that offers the range of services this place does. I have been staying here for many years and the only thing that has changed is the staff (at least they now offer a friendly smile).
Derby should be a tourist Mecca with some of the most unique and incredible landscape within a couple of hours drive. However with limited options for accommodation, poor services generally (try and rent a car and you will see what I mean) and massive overpricing, most tourists choose to stay in Broome where there are many more options.
Think fried eggs that have been sitting in a baine Marie for an hour, dry bacon, homebrand baked beans and a toaster with a plastic bag of bread alongside (without tongs) and you start to get an idea of the standard (and cooked breakfast a la help yourself is $22.50).
The rooms are dark and beds roll around all over the tiled floor, but they are relatively clean. The TV is old style CRT on a bamboo table (typical of furnishings) and recently they upgraded air conditioners (before they only had in wall rattlers, that are stll there).
It's sad that a great place like Derby needs tourists to improve facilities and while they try to attract them they have to pay staff well so there must be much left to pour back to improve the place. At $265 a night (higher than 5 star in Perth) I can't understand why improvements don't happen. If you plan to stay in Derby just imagine it's on the edge of nowhere and we are probably lucky to get 3 stars?

“Better than expected”

The room and bathroom were clean, plenty of fresh towels. Room smelt a little damp (due to the extreme wet weather they had been having) until the air conditioning was put on but it worked really well. Better room than some I'd experienced in London, UK and Melbourne, Australia.

Derby is not a luxury resort and considering the climate and area this hotel provides for your needs adequately and the staff were helpful. I may have been lucky as my room was a decent size, had one single and a double and was well decorated.

Pool area looked good and although I didn't get the chance to eat in the hotel, other guests said the food was good.

“This hotel is need of a desperate renevoation”

We were staying in this hotel for approximately 4 weeks , what a tired run down place this is . I would not pay $50 a night for this place but our company was paying over $180 per night as accommodation is very limited in Derby.

The rooms are old and out dated , The prices for a can of bourban are $11 and for a schooner are $6.60 or a stubby of beer $7. The menu for food is also expensive and average . I found the Boab Hotel which is down the road approximately 500 metres is a much better venue for food as well as social life. The sheets at the king sound do not get changed unlles you put a note on your door. Our phone did not work , nor did our video chanel on the tv. The tv is also very old and was hazzey reception. They do not have a toaster in the room , only a kettle for tea and coffee, as they want everyone to eat at their bistro.

The pool was the only thing good about the king sound , when you think how busy they are , it would not hurt them to do a refit on the place and maybe a coat of paint .

“The most grossly overpriced, shabby accomodation of all time. A complete rip off.”

This place does not deserve any stars. Exorbitant prices, reception staff off hand to the point of rudeness, broken glass in entrance door, no lifts to first floor bedrooms which were poky & dark. My advice: free camp if you can or better still, bypass Derby entirely and head for Broome.
