Our stay was not at the best of times as it was the school holidays and Mt. Buller was packed with kids. It snowed so heavily and the tree boughs were groaning under the weight of the snow. Long glistening icicles hung from the eaves. Hans came around with his accordion at dinner and everyone had to stay to celebrate a birthday, Wyeth or not one was acquainted with the birthday girl!
The rooms are large and equipped with an enormous jacuzzi tub and lots of hot water, which is SO nice after a long day on the slopes.
Hans is the charmer. His dining room has a fireplace with beautiful wood carvings depicting the development of Mount Buller as a ski resort.
His wife Lottie, runs the admin side of thing, and what a joy to get email responses in minutes. She is so very clued-in to the needs to skiers rushing in and out, and all in her calm and typically well mannered European way. Need a quick lunch whipped up? No problem! We were so rushed, and she simply took care of everything and set our minds at ease.
My only caveat is to specify that you'd want a room with a view. Pay a little more for it. It will be worth it if you are staying for more than a couple of days.
Loved it so much, we're going back again in Spetember. Mind you we're from Singapore so it's not a short trip. We plan to go back at least once a year.
BTW the lodge is only a 2 minute walk from the ski school in ski boots. The nearest lift is about 50 meters from the front door.
