“a very original studio”

We stayed for 1 night in studio 4, which has as an elevated terrace, the studio was exactely as described on the website, we indeed didn't see anyone when checking in/out, keys were on the door and left there when leaving, just had a call with the (?) manager. The terrace is for us next to the original style and privacy (you don't see the other studio's) the bonus of this place. Bright (which is at walking distance) itself is a more lively town, and we suppose in the winter season even more.. Anyway a good stopover for us and a nice way to discover the mountains around.

“Would you like a Huntsman with that??”

For a few years now my partner and I have wanted to stay at this place, we loved the idea of eco-friendly accommodation in native bushland. I tried organising a stay a few years back but was put off by the rude and arrogant manager who decided to get angry and frustrated when I wanted to change booking dates - mind you it was still one month until we were due to stay there. I decided to cancel the booking since I wasn’t going to waist my time with such a rude person.

Fast forward three years later and we were urgently trying to find a place to stay in Bright for a weekend when hubby reminded me about the Odd Frog - since it had been a few years since my encounter with the rude manager I thought I would give this place a second chance. This time around it was still the same lady and she still had an arrogance to her but she wasn’t rude, so to make hubby happy I booked the accommodation.

We arrived on a stinking hot Saturday to a studio which to our surprise had no air con! Obviously a mistake I had made since I didn’t read the info on the internet site properly but nether less, this small, cramped room with a tin shed had one fan on the ceiling in the lounge/kitchen that spun so slow that it didn’t create any breeze.

I rang the manager and advised her of the heat and she advised in an arrogant tone that if I had happened to read the information on the internet site I would have seen that this place was eco-friendly and that means no use of air con! I tried to ask politely for a refund but she flat out refused - fair enough as this was my fault for not reading the info properly. She started to become frustrated with me and said that if id bothered to open all the windows I would get some air in - and so with that I hung up the phone and proceeded to open the windows. Half an hour later the biggest huntsman you have ever seen decided to come and sit next to me as I was on the couch! So big in fact that my hubby couldn’t find anything to catch it in! Then in a space of a few hours more and more huntsman’s inside the house! By 5pm I had decided I had had enough, there was no way I was going to sit inside a tin shed and boil away the night with massive spiders all over the place..

I enjoy nature just like anyone else but would prefer it to be outside and not in my personal space, and for $200 a night I think it was disgraceful that such a place can get away with such infestation like that. Not to mention the ants all over the floor inside the house. Cobwebs all over the windows - for goodness sakes, at least clean the windows a little if your going to charge $200 a night!

Furniture and appliance were tired and dirty, nothing like the picture on the internet.
TV was from the 80's and didn’t even have digital channels so for the few hours that we were there we watched three channels.

I think if this place was regularly maintained it might not be a bad place to stay at - they def need to close up holes and cracks in walls, doors and windows so spiders and ants dont get in. Perhaps in Winter it would be a much nice place to stay at, but for me the experience left me horrified and I wont be returning.

“Lovely accommodation, beautiful views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2011

The Odd Frog was our last stop on a road trip from Brisbane to Melbourne, our first week back in Australia after some years away. What a spectacular place! We loved being so close to the Australian bush again with kangaroo visitors outside out front door at dusk. The studios have a fabulous view and all the comforts of home with a fully stocked kitchen. We made great use of the bbq and loved reading the detailed write-up about the eco-friendly design of the studios. Will definitely be back!

“Exceeded Expectations...Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2010

My partner and I stayed in studio 5 (the largest cabin) with another couple and our 3 month old baby. From the minute we entered the cabin we were completely blown away by the impressive architecture, design and overall presentation of the cabin. The natural and recyclable materials used in the construction of the bulding were artistic and chic, while also being eco-friendly. When we stepped out onto the massive deck we were greeted with one of the best views of any accommodation in Bright and the bushland setting of the property was naturally beautiful with minimum landscaping or clearing of the natural bush. As far as location goes, the property was close enough to town to be convenient, but far enough out to feel like we were in a bush retreat. The highlight of the cabin included the gorgeous and luxurios spa bath, set in a raised wooden deck in the bathroom, the cosy fireplace, the huge deck (perfect for bbqs and sunset cocktails) and the beautiful & inspiring design. Every aspect of the cabin was complete- from a fully functional kitchen, to perfectly cut-to-size logs for the fire stacked neatly on the deck. I also have to complement the lovely owners on being friendly and helpful and for providing excellent service. The Breakfast hamper was wholesome and delicious! The 4 of us could not find fault with the property and found our stay to be excellent value for money. We were so sad to be leaving that we have decided to return again for a longer stay in summer. I would be very surprised if anyone was disappointed with their stay at the Odd Frog, particularly in studio 5.

“Great idea, poor execution”

We spent the weekend up in Bright and stayed at The Odd Frog.
We arrived in the middle of a tremendous downpour and were really happy with the service we received at reception. We were given a couple of umbrellas to try and keep us dry when we were going from our car to our room. They didn't work very well but the thought is what counted.
We got to our lodging and were very impressed with the design. It is "chic tin shed". All ply wood and corrugated iron. We got the fire going as quick as possible. It is the only heating but is more than sufficient.
The bedroom/living area has a double bed, small table with 2 chairs, t.v., dvd player and a stereo as well as the wood heater.
The bathroom/walk in robe/kitchenette area has a huge shower which is great, 1 basin, toilet, area to hang clothes, bar fridge, toaster, kettle and plenty of cups, plates and cutlery for 2 people. There was enough coffee and tea to satisfy even the greatest caffeine addict.
The setting is perfect for a getaway weekend. You are totally separate from any other people. Each "cabin" is at least 20 metres away from the next. The natural bush setting envelopes you so that you feel as if in an oasis all of your own.
Some points of concern to me were that the cabin was pretty small. I am sure that it was the smallest one that they offer but in saying that the $150 per night price tag probably leads you to believe that you will be staying in something bigger than your average hotel room and this was probably smaller than that.
There is no door separating the toilet from the area where you prepare breakfast. At the very least there should be a sliding door to close off the bathroom from the kitchenette.
We would go back but we wouldn't stay in that cabin again.
