I booked a room at the Firehouse Inn while in Rutherfordton for my 30th high school reunion. There was a blue grass festival (with Doc Watson!) in town on the same night and both hotels were booked. Did I mention this is a small town? The Innkeeper was away for the afternoon but left a welcome package with key for room #1. The room was just off the main living room and kitchen area but we never felt a lack of privacy. Our room was 5-star. It was huge with a large whirlpool tub, beautiful shower, separate dressing areas and a huge closet. It was apparent that the closet was once a safe but more on that later.
After my reunion festivities, we returned to the inn for the night and wanted a snack. Our Innkeeper left the most wonderful crumb cake on the kitchen counter for guests to enjoy. We also found the coffee maker for guests so we knew where to get our cup of coffee in the morning. Our welcome letter said that breakfast would be seated promptly at 8:30.
We woke up as is our normal routine, around 7:00. After getting dressed, my husband ventured to the kitchen to fetch coffee. He was gone for 20 minutes or so and I thought I should see what happened to him. I found him embroiled in conversation with the Innkeeper, David ,who was busy preparing our breakfast. You would have thought they were lifelong friends. That is how David made us all feel during our stay. We learned that our suite was formerly the office of the Police Chief and our closet was his evidence safe!
David served wonderful fruit, egg casserole, sausages, toast and juices for breakfast and even shared the recipe with us. We enjoyed getting to know the other guests at the breakfast table and hearing about the music festival that they all attended. David continued to captivate us with his colorful stories from all around the world. He was most recently the Butler's Trainer for 3 years at The Cloisters on Sea Island. He is a top notch professional.
The rates are more than reasonable and the property is beautiful. They have a total of 6 rooms and a lovely courtyard for guests to enjoy. I would highly recommend The Firehouse Inn. I am sorry we could only stay one night. I can promise that when my Mom's house is full again, we will be at the Firehouse!
