“Superb place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

I fail to see why a previous visitor found cause for complaint as the rooms at Abbotsford are first class - very clean, the furniture beautiful individual antiques (not mass produced veneered wood which may match), a comfortable sofa, a fridge for lovely Barossa wines and the 'twig' was a piece of very old and gnarled vine with lights on for a Christmassy feel! The views in every direction are beautiful and it is well located for visiting the Barossa area with many wineries and places to eat nearby. It is a very relaxing place with no tv or internet in the bedrooms for a peaceful, away from it all stay (wifi in the lounge). I would thoroughly recommend it.

“The prefect B&B stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

My husband and I stayed here with a small group of friends for a weekend get away in the Barossa, it was the perfect B&B stay. The rooms are beautifully decorated and so spacious with the most amazing bathroom!

The B&B over looks the hills, the grounds are surrounded by beautiful roses gardens and impressive hedges.

Jane and Julian are ever so friendly and make you feel right at home, they also cook a great breakfast.

All in all, I highly recommend Abbotsford Country House for a relaxing weekend away.

The room had an amazing view over the vineyards and Julian and Jane were lovely and couldn't do more to make the stay as welcoming as possible. Jane's breakfasts were amazing as well!!

“Nice but attention to detail is missing here”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2011

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in October whilst visiting the Barossa. As you dive up to the main homestead there is an impressive array of white roses surrounding the homestead and driveway. There are a few doors to the main homestead and it wasn't clear as to which one we should enter, however after parking and walking around to the front of the house we entered the house and were greeted by Julian the owner. The main house is impressive in size and contains a large lounge area for guests to utilise. There is no television in here - or in your room, but there is plenty of reading material to read or it is quiet enough to sit and just relax. If you wish to make use of the internet you need to come to the lounge to get wifi as there isn't any wifi in the your room.
Outside at the rear of the homestead are 2 buildings which are the guest rooms. You would have to describe our room as rather eclectic! It was furnished with a very comfortable king size bed with beautiful white linen but after that as you looked around the room it was like they had gone to a jumble sale and put odd bits of furniture in just to fill the rooms. There was an antique wardrobe (which was pretty useless for hanging your clothes in!), and a non matching antique looking chest of drawers of which one of the handles was half hanging off, and a modern 2 seater couch which faced the wardrobe,(not the best view) a small white fridge sat in another corner of the room on a little square, cheap looking table which had a red gingham cloth draped over it and the coffee table didn't match anything! So with no view and no TV, there was only one thing to do.........and that was to drink the wonderful wine we had purchased throughout the day. You are provided with complimentary port but I suspect it was bulk purchased as it wasn't actually very nice and I love port!
The bathroom had been fitted out beautifully. tiled walls and floors, with a spa bath, single hand basin, toilet and modern shower. There was a small box in the bathroom which inside was the hair dryer and spare toilet paper, on top of the box were your toiletries and some complimentary condoms! The only real problem was that there was only one plug which could be used for the handbasin and the bath, so if one was using the bath, the other one couldn't have used the hand basin.
Whilst the room was clean, when you started looking around it really could and should have been better for what you are paying. Cobwebs on the outside furniture, leaves in the grooves of the door, a hole in the fly screen door, dust on a side table which a piece of twig was sitting on with fairy lights on it! Rubbish in the bed side table from a previous guest.

In the morning we went into the main homestead for breakfast (which doesn't start until 8.30am and felt that was a little late especially as the entire process took an hour, so for those of you wanting to explore it meant a late start each day). Breakfast is served on a long table which seats up to 12 people (and was full most mornings), so you have the opportunity to talk to other people on the table. Complimentary newspapers are available in the dining room.
Jane (Julian's wife) does the cooking and the breakfasts are big and will just about last you till dinner time. You can start off with a continental breakfast and follow it with the cooked breakfast but unless you have a big appetite, I would recommend just waiting for that wonderfully cooked breakfast. They will make any type of coffee for you, (o.j.or tea) and then tell you what is available for breakfast and you can choose to have as much or as little as you like, but Jane does like to ensure that you are well fed. The choices for breakfast are; Haggis, black or white pudding, 2 types of sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushroom and toast (I think that was it) - Don't miss out on this it is a great breakfast which Jane cooks in the kitchen which is all part of the dining room.
She also makes her own Christmas pudding which is absolutely delightful and you can buy these and take them home with you (at the right time of the year).
The owners are great hosts but for accommodation which is rated 4 or 4.5 stars it just lacks that attention that a superior hotel/b and b would normally have.

“Charged twice and needed credit card company to recover the money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

while the b&b is nicely located, with comfortable rooms and decent breakfast, the memory that remains whas how hard to recover the money when we had discovered that we were charged for our room twice days apart shrotly after making thebooking. I only discoved the error on the credit card statement few weeks after our stay. it took months to recover the money, emails were unanswered, the phone calls not returned, and when I finally got the owner on the phone, he claimed being away and promissed go attend to it within the next day but offered no apology but rather A comment along thelines of "yaeh, we know we owe you money and we are getting to it " I finally contacted the credit card ompany who sorted it out. I have never received an apology from the owner. I am really disapponted by the poor servi e, lack of consideration as well as poor financial manageemnt that had led to the double charge in the first place. Nevere again!
