“Certainly was a disappointing side to our holiday! Maybe it was the cockroaches..”
Where should i start.. i will start with the first room.. yep
day one- We get in after hours.. so our keys were left in a safe and a quick call to after hours phone reception gave us the directions to get in, easy.. Go up to our room, first impressions were good.. looked similar to how the photos suggest. We were lucky to have a fairly new couch.. the bed was reasonably comfortable. Within half an hour of being there i decided i would have a peek around what was in the full service kitchen (which is one of the main points that attracted me to this particular hotel). Had a look at what was in the cupboard under the sink.. there was a chopping board and... some baby cockroaches, yay.. Not to mention all of the dishes needed rewashing before using (and only one small dishwashing sachet to last 8 nights). So i call after hours reception to ask for some fly spray.. no can do, she tells me to ask at reception in the morning.. So i thought i would call for a cab to go buy some.. Our hotel phone does not work and the payphone nearest to the hotel has a chocolate covered earpiece.. so it was a long walk at midnight with my two year old son to buy some and let me add that Southport does not appear to be the safest suburb on the Goldcoast.. Next day i let the lady at reception know and she said she would have someone spray the room, we get back that evening and see more cockroaches and after hours reception says that i could ask for a new room the next day.. so i do and they cannot do that, they told me that the cockroaches must be flying in from the window.. Oh have i mentioned how poor the fridge worked and how dirty it was, well so was the oven.. So anyway we are still in the same room and on morning five wake up to a cockroach crawling up the head of the bed and then another from the top cupboards whilst making our breakfast.. so this time i called the reception (during business hours) and demanded a new room, at first they were reluctant and said they do not have anything.. but ended up calling me back and offering me another room downstairs. The second room still had cockroaches but on a positive note.. they were all dead. The room was 10 times dirtier then the first, the couches were all old and stained.. let me emphasise.. they were filthy enough that i put the blankets from my bed over them (i used the ones from the bed as the ones in the cupboard were not clean and had marks that i would not want to imagine what they were).. The carpets looked and felt like they had not been washed for their lifetime, they literally made my feet feel dirty. The bed had no padding on it whatsoever (after i complained, someone came up to put blankets on the bed to pad it.. and it made a huge difference.. not!).. the shower must have had something poured down it and whatever it was had clogged the drain and was now mould (the kind of mould from food or liquid).. The fridge was in the same condition as the first room. I had a decent view in the first room but not the second.
If the first room did not have cockroaches i would probably be posting a pleased review.. the reception ladies were pleasant and helpful when speaking to them about other things. I did not expect a perfect room.. but the cockroaches were ridiculous. The second room was just a joke but on a plus there were no live cockroaches. My guess is the second room was an unused room due to the shower, the bed and the fridge, but a warning on the condition of it before going in there would have been well appreciated.
Clearly i would not stay again.. with a really good clean and spray the first room probably would be worth the four stars they have.. so i guess its not all bad..
Oh and a warning for anyone who has already booked, a creepy old guy who lives there parades around in his budgie smugglers, hogs the spa and stares! just a warning
