“Out of season isolation on the Costa Brava”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2010

Stayed for three nights whilst visiting my sister and parents who live 10 miles up the road from Lloret in a somewhat more Catalan town. Staying in Lloret has it's advantages as you can get relatively well appointed hotel accommodation even if in season your fellow visitors may rank high on the extroversion scale. Out of season a lot of the commercial activity dies down and you are confronted with a slightly depressing image of shuttered shop fronts and closed restaurants and bars. January seems the worst month and my short stay in December revealed one or two favourite stop-offs were still open. All of which is a preamble to saying the Guitart Monterrey rather reflected the December mood in Lloret in that activity was conspicuous by its absence. This is a big hotel with quite generous bedrooms [I had two double beds to myself], good bedroom facilities and efficient staff. However the long empty corridors with their never opening doors gave the hotel a Kafkaesque quality and my only viewing of the restaurant which was largely empty somewhat reinforced that.

The location is a quiet one behind the new casino. The weather was cold whilst I was there and the hotel location didn't encourage the walk between hotel and town. All of that would of course need rethinking with better weather in season. I got a reasonable deal on-line paying between £50 and £60 a night for the room. Breakfast which I avoided in favour of pintxos in one of my favourite bars in town cost 16 euros; I was also promised a garage charge of 16 euros a day which thankfully didn't materialise. Given the cost would probably have been the same if my wife was with me I would consider the hotel again for a similar price. It is certainly one of Lloret's better establishments and offers a good degree of comfort with a nod in the direction of luxury. In season I would probably avoid Lloret altogether!

“Awful Service! Beware!”

We actually stayed here around the time of our wedding. So it was a real shame that the service was so bad here and staff were beyond rude and unhelpful as well as problems at every turn. From actually escorting us to the wrong rooms initially three times - to constant mix up of reservations which when we presented our paper work was fine (they seemed to have no records of anything) - really rude reception staff - and some older members of our family having to wait for their rooms and beds to be made up at 2 am. Was actually embarassed we had stayed in this hotel, although it had been recommended to me. And worse is it was quite expensive, particularly given the time of year. The hotel faciities are are quite nice, as is the decor. The regular and deluxe rooms are quite small and not very spacious. However larger rooms and suites really nice. If you don't speak Spanish you may find it difficult here. A real shame, this hotel was a complete let-down and having stayed in so many wonderful hotels across the world - a real pity this was where we stayed with family around our wedding. Would never go back.

“All in all a little disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2010

Hotel staff were very friendly and very helpful.

However, I am not sure that I would say that I got value for money.

Firstly - I booked a "Luxe" room. Unlike the picture on the hotel website, the balcony was very, very small (about 2m square) and there was only a "sort of" sea view. The sea is not square on so you have to purposefully look left to see about a 60% sea view.

In addition the TV channels on offer were very poor. No choice of Movie or Sports channels at all. In fact I had to request help, just to be able to get English speaking news channels. A 1 star service as far as TV goes.

The breakfast was good, as was the outside swimming pool.

Overall though, I was expecting a little more for my money. I think that you can get much better value for money in Lloret de Mar.

Dear Sir: To start with, thank you for staying with us. We have just recently completed a total refurbishment of the property in an effort to offer our guests best possible comfort.

Given the importance you attach to room view, we recommend you opt for our room categories »Suite« or »Gran Suite« when booking with us next time. We have taken note of your request for a wider choice of TV channels and will discuss this issue internally.

“48 years on still fantastic.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2010

I stayed in this hotel with my sister on my first ever trip abroad in August 1962 and we were amazed by it at that young age and 48 years on it didn't disappoint. My partner and I stayed sadly only 2 nights earlier this month, I had brought a photograph of myself and my sister standing at the pool 48 years ago!! We were welcomed so warmly by Alex and his team you would have thought we had been there every year for the last 48!! We were very kindly given a room upgrade and everything was just perfect.
The food in Restauarnt Freu was delicious...we did the "Menu Freu World Tour 2010" it consisted of 10 courses of dished from around the world it was nothing short of 1st class in terms of tast and presentation. We were attended to by Laura who was absolutely delightful, the wines which also came as part of the meal were from around the world also. The Monterrey Restaurant also served excellent food in the evening and a simply fantastic buffet breakfast.
Obviously in 48 years things have changed somewhat, been upgraded etc., but the gardens are still magnificent, the pool is huge (if a little cold), the Nautica Bar by the pool is excellent, and maybe more importantly the staff were friendly and only too willing to help with any queries you might have.
People say you should never go back - the memory of something good is always better than it may be on a return visit but for me this wan't the case the trip down memory lane was well worth it.

Thank you so much for your lines which we will share with our entire team. As you see, some things become better with age. ;-) But we truly hope we will not have to wait another 48 years to have you with us again at the Hotel Guitart Monterrey. :)

Best regards to the Emerald Isle.

The hotel fully deserves its 5* status. It is an oasis of peace in the middle of Lloret. Very competent and plesant staff, tasteful decoration. A special mention to Restaurant Freu which is absolutely outstanding.
