I had reservations and was shocked when we arrived in the area. There were homeless people standing on corners with "begging signs" all along Capital Blvd. When we drove into the hotel parking lot, a young person wearing what I would describe as pants below his butt was walking around the lot. We decided there was no way we felt safe, or felt like our car would would safe at night. It was BEFORE the 4 p.m. cancellation time, so I felt comfortable going into and tell the person on the front desk I wished to cancel our reservation. He said no problem. After we found another hotel in a more desirable neighborhood, I went onto the Quallity Inn web site to make sure our reservation had indeed been canceled. It had NOT been, and only then--by my canceling it myself--did I get a confirmed cancelation number. I now wonder if my credit card would have been charged had I not canceled the reservation myself. Lesson learned here: Don't trust the hotels' web sites because they sure won't mention what kind of neighborhood they're in; and always get a reservation cancellation number if you do cancel a reservation. Otherwise you may find you're charged for a room you didn't stay in.
