My wife and I have visited Ocracoke many times for day trips but had never stayed on the Island.
So, after considerable research, Captains Landing was our first choice and we were lucky to book one of their 11 large suites. The suites are located directly on the water (only hotel that is DIRECTLY ON THE WATER).
They have immaculately maintained two room suites (with double, separate-room, vanities), beautifully furnished (furniture looks new), with very soft bedding and all have full kitchens and large balconys. There is also a large private dock for guests who arrive by boat as well as complimentary bikes for each suite!
The owners are two of the nicest, friendliest and most professional hoteliers we've ever met. Aside from their standard duties, when we had mechanical problems with our small plane, they mobilized half the Island on a Sunday afternoon to help us out. The Island's plumber helped remove the battery from my plane and the local electrician figured out how to charge an aircraft battery with a golf cart, all under the watchful eye of the owners. Numerous other business owners also played into finally finding the full solution.
We have never seen such neighborly attitudes anywhere in our fairly extensive travels. Note: The staff (not related) were sincerely helpful and appeared very loyal to the owners.....a very telling, if rare, trait.
For those who have not been to this Island, it is serene and peaceful, with a fantastic historical and nautical flair...about as far from Myrtle Beach type atmosphere as possible, thankfully. The beach here is consistently rated high in cleanliness and visual beauty...Dr. Beach has given it "Top Beach in the World" designation more than once...and is easily accessible by bike from the Village. Numerous good, reasonably priced, restaurants are abundant on the Island....we liked Pony Island best for breakfast and Dajio's/Howards/Back Porch for dinner and lunches.
Also, the Island fish market is less than a block from the hotel so one night we had fresh fish, cooked in the suite by my wife with a bottle of wine on the large deck watching the sunset.
Needless to say, we'll be back to stay (possibly bringing a reunion as well) and will give this establishment the highest rating possible to family, friends and business associates.
Room Tip: You can drive and take a ferry from three different locations, arrive by private boat or airplane.
