although i have no problem with smoking, i found the rooms to be incredibly smoky. the room smelled like newports whenever the air conditioner was on. and the management had a dog that they kept in their apartment that did nothing but bark all day and most of the night. but hey, you get what you pay for. next time i'll definitely pay more and stay somewhere else. on a positive note, the people staying in the hotel were very nice and fiendly.

we recently 8/02/04 rented a room at the driftwood motel for one week but found upon entering this room it was not suitable for my wife as she is an asthmatic and could not breathe in this room. we had previously been assured that we would not be able to tell this was a smoking room. upon notifing the manager she would not refund the entire amount paid holding one days rent although we were there only less than two hours. we think this to be an unfair business practice.

Great little motel. The owners are just fabulous! Beach is right across the road and there are good restaurants on the island.

My husband and I just returned from a four-day trip to Oak Island. We stayed at the Driftwood Motel and loved it. Another reviewer, above, calls it a "ratrap", which we think is inaccurate. The rooms were indeed a little outdated, but they were clean and comfortable, and we found their 70s atmosphere charming. They had cable, a small fridge, and a microwave. The wall-unit AC kept the room icy cold when needed. The bathrooms were clean and housekeeping was accomodating about requests for extra towels. We loved the tidy communal kitchen and used it at least twice a day. It was fully stocked with utensils, dishes, cookware, etc. Cooking our own meals and eating them at the outdoor table, then enjoying a glass of wine under the vine-covered pergola was much better than searching for a restaurant. (On that subject, you should avoid the "Lucky Fisherman" seafood buffet.) They also have a nice little pool with an outdoor shower. The location across from Yaupon Pier and a public beach access is great. They allow small dogs. And the rates are affordable.
For $60-80 a night, you can't expect anything fancy. The Driftwood was a great value and we will probably try to go there again. (Note: we had a double room with two beds on the lower level the first night, then a single with one bed on the top floor the next two nights. We liked the smaller single better!)
