“Repeat visitor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010

I have been visiting this resort for over 20 years. My grandparents used to take me here when I was a kid, and i have continued going there now with my family. It is one of my favorite vacations...if you want to relax and not worry about planning out your days with busy activities, this is the place for you. Its about 15 minutes from downtown historic New Bern, which offers many stores from art, jewelry and antiques to restaurants, household stores and even the original Pepsi store. Past town there is a small shopping area. The beach is just about an hour away. A great little fishing/shopping town is also about an hour which is called Beaufort...plus the N.C Aquarium is less than an hour drive, and they have really done some major updates to the place..its a great place!! I cannot say enough of this resort. THe only downfall is that the resort only offeres 1 onsite restaurant, the shoppes vary year to year (depending upon ownership). it has a nice marina (altho I have never used any of those amenities). 2 fishing docks into the bag (although the resort no longer covers you under their fishing license, you are required to purchase 1 on your own). there are 3 large ponds on the island which give way to much wildlife and there are many biking/walking trails. golf is also offered (altho never played). the resort also has a small gym, indoor/outdoor pool, arcade area, mini golf, movie rental and play area for kids...love this place..can't say enough

“Excellent Resort and Location”

We are Wyndham VIP owners and have stayed at a lot of resorts in various locations, especially East Coast. We were looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway and found it at this resort and in the New Bern area.

We, too, were concerned about the resort based on the reviews. Yes, it was an older resort - part of Wyndham's Legacy Collection. We had been upgraded to a two-bedroom deluxe which was not what was pictured. We thought the 2nd bedroom would have a loft and be upstairs but everything was on one floor, with the two bedrooms separated by 2 bathrooms. Beds were both queens. Huge whirlpool tub. Large skylight brought in plenty of natural light. Most of the unit had been repainted and appliances and dishes, etc. were all brand new. Although all cabinets and cupboards were old, they were in good condition and afforded tons of storage space. Our unit also had a screened-in porch (with ceiling fan) which faced the lake - great for early a.m. coffee - there was a small deck, too. Air conditioning and ceiling fans worked great. Furniture and beds were in good condition and comfortable. And unit was clean with plenty of room to move about. TVs were smaller than you'd see in a new resort but worked well. There was a stereo system too.

Our unit was very close to the Marina (where we went sailing twice with http://onthewindsailingcruises.com) and the Rec Center. Rec Center had picnic tables, horseshoes, mini-golf, indoor pool, nice outdoor pool, volleyball court, etc. The resort was located in a neighborhood with many other condos so it was plenty big for walks or bike rides. Food Lion and gas station were about 5 miles away and the town of New Bern wasn't too much further.

New Bern had plenty to do. Shops, restaurants, trolley ride, historical sites such as Tryon Palace, another marina, bithplace of Pepsi, etc. We golfed at the http://emeraldgc.com (Emerald Golf Club) which had been recommended to us. Nice course. The courses near the Resort were closed on Mon & Tues and the one we saw by the road wasn't in the best condition but playable and seemed to be maintained. This year isNew Bern's 300th anniversary so lots to see and do.

We would definitely return. This is a quiet, relaxing resort with plenty to do at the resort and within 10 miles. Cell phone service didn't seem to work very well in the room so keep that in mind; we brought our wireless air card for internet access and it worked but seemed extra slow. Sailing was fabulous - Neuse River much bigger there than what you would think and very few other boats around even though we were there in August. So very private and uncrowded.

My extended family and I stayed ar Fairfield harbour for one week. I was a little skeptical about the place after reading the reviews on this website. However, I think that it is just picky people. The place was clean and beautiful. The deck looked out on a lake where the kids actually fished off the deck. People complained about bugs flying in the room, but what do you expect in summer near water. The pool was nice and the restaurant, Hurricanes, was very good and resonable. They have music on their outdoor deck on the weekends.

“Better than Savannah”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2010

The Fairfield Harbor resort was 30 years old. When was the last time they changed the carpet?
We were first put in a locked off unit near the golf course. This was secluded and far removed from the clubhouse and any activities (I don't golf). After three days of this, I asked to be moved nearer the action (and water). This unit, while the same age as the previous, was much more to our liking. However, my wife and I had to dispose of three wasp and too many spiders to count during our stay in the unit.
My son had a very discouraging time setting up his Xbox Live account. I found out that you had to call ATT to get it connected. The resort staff knew nothing about this. When we were finally up and running, we only had one bar and the lag was unbearable. This affected my son the most. The rest of us were on vacation. Still, we had to listen to him complain.
While in NC, I was in the search for the perfect crab cake. This allusive delicacy was finally located on our last day at the resort at the resort's own restaurant, The Hurricane. I met the owners, transplanted New York retirees. Very nice people who explained that they had a new cook whom they just loved. After tasting his crab cake, I see why.
The resort was just a short drive from New Bern's historic district, including the birth place of Pepsi. I enjoyed New Bern and it's history. Earlier in the week, we spent a couple of days in Savannah, GA. Savannah has more to offer but I enjoyed New Bern more.
We had a very good time.

“In the End an excellent place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2010

This trip was a mixture of buisness and pleasure, and on very short notice, having said that the only trouble I had with this stay was at the very beginning. There was some confusion about reservations which took several mins. to finally resolve, but during the process the staff was very helpful. The condo and the grounds was very clean and well maintaned.
