Just stayed at the Surf Side Hotel, and I loved it! I feel so lucky I benefitted from its excellent reviews here on Tripadvisor. For a very reasonable price, I got a room that was not just clean and comfortable, but charming too. Nice touches such as pretty colors, a room-darkening shade, handsome furniture, amazing soundproofing between rooms, wide screen TV, and appliances (microwave, small frig, coffee maker) that made meals a breeze. Plus the wonderful balcony! I had a south-facing "oceanview" room rather than the more expensive "oceanfront" rooms, but I had a fabulous view and really enjoyed the great sound of the breaking waves. I did splurge an extra $10 a night to be on the fourth floor, and I heartily recommend it. The daily breakfast buffet was most generous with fruit, yogurt, rolls, toast, hot and cold cereals and beverages. I swam in the indoor pool which is small but perfectly maintained. The larger outdoor pool looks great too. Every little thing in the place is clean and works beautifully, down to the gate latches on the boardwalks out to the beach. Oh yes, you have direct access to a wide, lovely portion of the beach. And you're in the southern portion of Nags Head, which is much less commercial and which gives you easy access both to Roanoke Island and the southern Outer Banks. Finally, as a woman traveling alone, I'm happy to say I felt totally safe during my entire stay. I felt welcomed and very well-treated by the staff. Loved it so much that I came for two nights and stayed for five. If you want a great room at a good price, do yourself a favor and stay at the Surf Side.
