We booked this Microtel only because it was the only Microtel in the Charlotte area that wasn't full on account of the NCAA tournament. There are 5 or 6 Microtels in Charlotte and I have to imagine that this is the worst. I have stayed at other Microtels without a problem, so it's not like I am unaccustomed to the Microtel experience.
This hotel is not in a great location. It is in Matthews, which is a nice area, but this is in a seedier part. It is close to restaurants and strip malls, but sort of set off on its own behind a tire store.
We had no problem with check-in and the desk clerk was very friendly. The room was very outdated and while the bed and bathtub were clean, there was some dirt and unidentifiable smears on the walls both in our room and in the hallways.
Our problems started our first night around 2am. A construction crew was evidently lodging at the hotel, and they came in with all their trucks. I have no idea where they came from, but they may have been drunk. They tried to get into our room but must have realized they had the wrong room and then "settled" loudly into the rooms all around ours.
The second night, a truck full of men parked outside our room around 11:30-- construction crew again?-- with their lights on and played rap music very loudly. I called the front desk and asked them to take care of the problem. The woman at the front desk was very helpful and must have gone out there to tell them to leave.
Overall, friendly staff, but shady clientele and not the best location. You can't beat the price-- we paid $49 a night-- but I would have rather gotten a good night's rest and paid more to stay elsewhere. If we stay at a Microtel in Charlotte again, we'll pick a different one.
