We left this B&B with mixed feelings. We stayed in the stand alone cottage at the front of the property, not the main house that serves as the true B&B. Our accommodations were very welcoming. It is a beautifully appointed home with lots of very cute details. The cottage is well kept and very spacious. It is comfortable and inviting. Anyone traveling with a family would do well in it. It also has a small back yard for pets, just be careful with the slope! If you are looking to totally disconnect, this place is for you. For our purposes, it didn’t really work out the way we expected. At $250 per night + taxes, we felt that there were certain things that should have been different. Below are points that we felt needed to be mentioned. Most of them are within the control of the innkeepers, although a couple of the points, such as distance and maybe the neighborhood dog, are not in their control.
Distance – this place is very far from everything. The purpose of our trip and therefore our reason for choosing this B&B was that it’s right in Mars Hill, a ski area. We didn’t get any snow so there was nothing to do in the area, making it inconvenient to go anywere without making a 30 minute trek. Had it snowed enough for the ski area to be open, I suppose we would have been happy with the location. This is just something to keep in mind, since everything is very far.
Phone and Internet – There is no phone signal, none whatsoever in the cottage. There is also no internet. This was a HUGE problem for us, since we need to be reachable at all times. The innkeepers do have a phone in the cottage for the use of guests, however, you cannot make any calls outside of the local area code and even then some local calls would not go through. It was very frustrating to be incommunicable. At one point, we could not get the phone number to a local restaurant to make a reservation so we called the main house for their assistance and left a voicemail. We never heard back from them so we had to drive out to the main road to get a cell phone signal to get the number.
Safety – my husband locked himself in the master bedroom and could not get out. The door knob is broken and doesn’t work from the inside. Had we both been in the room with the door closed, we would have been locked it with no option but to break out. In the event of a fire or emergency, this would have been a scary situation.
TV Channels – there is Direct TV provided in the cottage but the channels are very limited.
Mystery Noise – The last 2 nights we were there, there was an incredibly loud crunching noise during the night. It almost sounded like a water bottle getting crushed over and over again. We couldn’t tell where it was coming from but it sounded like it was in the house with us. It wasn’t because we looked around, but it may have been in the basement, which was located right under our bedroom. Not pleasant.
Toiletries and Housekeeping – there was trash in the 2nd bedroom when we checked in that did not belong to us, which is a little icky. We also were only provided one roll of toilet paper and one box of tissue. For 2 adults staying 4 nights, it was a bit limited. By the 3rd morning, we were out of toilet paper and started to use the tissue. By the 4th morning, we were using kitchen napkins. For $250/night + taxes, we felt this was not appropriate.
Neighborhood Dog – this is by far our biggest issue with our stay. There is a dog who belongs to a neighbor but is ALWAYS loose and basically lives either on the front porch of the cottage or right outside the kitchen window. I will say that this dog is extremely sweet and seems very intelligent. Completely harmless and really wants love and attention. However, we were traveling with our intact 18 month old male dog who quickly becomes protective of his “home” and is not OK with other dogs hanging out on the front porch. The front door is glass, so having the dog sitting right outside created a nightmare for us. We had to block the front door with our dog’s crate so he would not be able to see out, forcing us to get in and out of the cottage by the back door during the whole stay. We also had to draw all the curtains shut. This dog would not leave. We called the innkeepers on the first night there and they tried to get him to leave but it didn’t work. It was frustrating to know that this dog was out there in the rain and cold while we were inside all cozy and comfortable. Where we are from, a loose dog is a poorly cared for dog, so there was an emotional component to having this dog sitting out there that we should not have had to deal with on vacation. As dog lovers, it really bothered us to see him out there day and night.

NINE OUT OF 10 DOGS STILL PREFER PONDER COVE...not to mention 98% of TRIP ADVISOR REVIEWS.
My husband always says "you better keep your sense of humor if you want to be in the Bed and Breakfast business". It is times like this that I know he is right. Lord knows we innkeepers who invite total strangers into our homes don't have a clue why we do it. It is probably because we love people and the cross section of strangers that we take into our homes are of the best sort. We love our guests and we thank you for your patronage.
Everyone is allowed their opinion. I think I am going to start a website called "Innkeepers anonymous". We innkeepers need a forum tell the truly great stories, like the rowdy gal that was heard through the night hollering "you are a my tiger let me hear you roar". LOL But Trip Advisor does give us the opportunity to answer posts. I would like to offer this as a review of Ponder Cove but also what to expect when traveling to the mountains of North Carolina.
Her operative words were "for our purposes". So right up front ...if you are looking for traffic, city sounds, a Starbucks on every corner, cell service from every carrier in the country, a free telephone and every channel that Direct TV has to offer DO NOT COME TO PONDER COVE. If you want to sit in a hot tub and count more stars than you remember seeing in the sky, experience the sound of silence and swing in a porch swing and gaze at the cattle before you while sipping your "brew your own" coffee (remember those days) DO COME TO PONDER COVE.
DISTANCE: We are 30 minutes from Asheville (and have never claimed to be anything but). One can grab a good meal anywhere from 10-20 minutes. All of this info is in the book in our rooms and Bungalow. If you are looking for things to do, that too is in the books and a myriad of brochures are available. Most of our guests understand Madison County is home to the Appalachian Trail and they can enjoy many outdoor opportunities even if it doesn't snow. To quote my guests "Had it snowed enough for the ski area to be open, I suppose we would have been happy with the location." If you do come here for skiing I would call the mountain to check their advisory reports. As you can imagine, that is one thing I can not predict.
PHONE and INTERNET: My husband also says "we suffer from the lack of population density". That is why some services just don't reach us but we certainly love the luxury of the trade off. We will take the peace and quiet, thank you. As far as cell phone service...my friend in Malibu can't get service. So, I feel we are in good company. It is a little thing called the mountains. Most carriers do work beautifully. My Iphone with Verizon allows me all access to phone and Internet.
ACCESS TO THE INNKEEPERS: We are available 24/7 and answered several calls from this guests. I am sorry we missed her call about the restaurant but I am glad she was able to reach results by traveling across the yard to the road to get a signal. We mountaineers have learned it is just what you have to do sometime.
SAFETY: Again a Ponder Cove Bungalow disclaimer. This is a 1938 house and a doorknob just might loose a screw. I am extremely dismayed that this being a safety issue that we were not told for the benefit of the next guests. We had to discover this on Trip Advisior. To quote the guests "we would have been locked it with no option but to break out. In the event of a fire or emergency, this would have been a scary situation." For future guests please note that if you need to "break out"...please open the window and step onto the grass of your one story home. Also note that our county inspects us yearly and you will find the appropriate fire extinguishers and smoke alarms and a phone that can always call 911. Your safety is very important to us.
MYSTERY NOISE.. We have had guests since and no such claims have been made. We of course checked the basement immediately. I can now lay claim to a ghost which I hear is a big calling in the B & B business. Stay tuned for my Bungalow Seance Special.
TOILETRIES AND HOUSEKEEPING – If there was trash in a waste can or not enough tissue I too would find that disappointing. I am sorry the guests didn't access the bathroom cabinets to replenish their toiletries or call us.
NEIGHBORHOOD DOG – My husband also says "you ain't from around here, are you". An outdoor dog is not an uncared for dog in the montains. Meet Doc. He is the neighbor dog and with my dog loving guests and a few too many invited play times and treats he thinks he can check in when you check in. I offered to call the neighbors if he needed to be kept away but never heard from the guests. He is a love and his hard working family are at work a lot and he loves the attention. So, if you have some heart give him a cuddle ...if not I will call the neighbors.
So, to quote the opening lines of this review "Our accommodations were very welcoming. It is a beautifully appointed home with lots of very cute details. The cottage is well kept and very spacious. It is comfortable and inviting. Anyone traveling with a family would do well in it. It also has a small back yard for pets, just be careful with the slope! If you are looking to totally disconnect, this place is for you"
So is Western North Carolina and Ashville right for you. We sure think so. Let us share our breathtaking scenery and an opportunity to be amongst the tall trees and mountains highs . Unplug and allow yourself some chill time. BUT analyze just how much "getting away" you can really handle. If you really need that concrete and the city sounds you have many choices for great stays in Asheville and yes you can take your dog. Ponder Cove was the first dog friendly accommodation in the Asheville area and 9 out of 10 dogs still claim Ponder Cove is the best. So, we hope to see you soon.
hugs and Happy New Year
Your happy innkeeper, martha
