“First night AWFUL, second night OK.”

My husband called the hotel directly to make the reservation to be certain the person he spoke to had direct knowledge of what was available. He was told the only room available was handicap accessible (we did not require that) and non-smoking (we do require that). When we arrived, we were given a smoking room on the second floor that was disgusting. The room reeked so badly of smoke that it literally created a raw, burning feeling in my throat. If it weren't so chilly that night, I would have slept by the pool as there was no other room available in the Outer Banks. We spoke with another couple the next morning and they told us they were originally given that room and insisted the hotel move them. Thankfully, the manager moved us to another room for our second night which was a thousand times better. It was noticeably dated, but it was clean and we were so relieved to be out of the other room. My husband and I stay in hotels 6-10 times each year. I have never written to any company to complain, but I thought it was only fair to alert their corporate management about our sickening experience. They did not bother to email back. I am a member of the Holiday Inn Priority Club, but this experience coupled with the fact that management didn't care enough to respond has turned me off to ever staying in a Holiday Inn again.

“Decent Hotel - could use a little renovation but good overall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2010

Hotel was good - not great. It is a pretty old beach hotel - is very beachy. You sense that lots of sandy feet have trekked through the hotel over the years. But you can walk to the beach and are close to all the fun sites to see.

Quick drive to the Kitty Hawk monument which is interesting and fun to walk around. Also, close to the dunes which are must especially with kids. Overall the rooms were clean and the service was great. Breakfast was delicious, parking was easy and we were pleased with our stay overall.

“Best of OBX, will come here year after year!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2010

We stayed at this hotel for a week last year and scheduled our trip this year to stay again. The service is incredible, staff is very friendly, rooms are impeccably clean, breakfast is amazing, and the hotel is so convenient to everything. Our mistake this year was not reserving a room after Thursday night, so we had to move out for Friday and Saturday night due to no rooms available, and we wish we could have stayed. Can't wait to return!

“Nice hotel withing close walking distance to beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2010

Checked in at the last minute after checking out of a roach hotel close-by. The staff was very friendly, accomodating, and helpful. Good rate (especially Government rate) for being a beach hotel. EXCELLENT free hot breakfast in the morning. Within 75 yards walking distance out of the back of the hotel to the beach. Rooms were especially clean (cleaner than expected being so close to the beach). Lobby and public bathrooms were very nice. Room was very nice and clean - flat screen TV, comfortable beds and newer bedding. We didn't use the pool, but did check it out. Nice and clean, however at the front of the hotel near the street (?). They should have cut the parking lot in back to accomodate the pool and expanded the parking lot out front. Internet had a good speed.

“Totally fine for a one-night stay, and fairly priced compared to other options”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2010

We stayed here just one night before checking into a weekly house rental farther up the beach. The other reviews kind of scared me but we found what we expected here. First of all, it’s a Holiday Inn Express at the beach, not the Ritz Carlton. It’s fairly priced considering it’s in a beach community – some of the other chain hotels in the area had eye-popping nightly rates that made you expect a Ritz Carlton!

The hotel has had a recent makeover – paint, carpeting, bedding – but not mattresses, which were old and a bit creaky. Not as bad for me but my husband compared it to Uncle Fester’s mattress in the Addams Family (a bed of nails). Plus, he is 6’4” and his feet hung off the bed all night, poor guy. It wasn’t the worst night’s sleep ever but a lot of comparable hotels (and HI Express locations) have upgraded mattresses so that was a bummer.

Staff was very nice and accommodating even when I stopped by the front desk in the middle of the night to ask about internet access. Internet access is much the same as it is along the entire OBX, weak and inconsistent – don’t know why.

Our room did not smell musty or of cigarette smoke but of the trademark HI Express Cinnamon Bun toiletries – a nice welcome. We received a welcome bag with a note from the manager, an apple, bottle of water and Rice Krispie Treat for being base Priority Club members, so that was nice.

Breakfast was adequate, but not gourmet by any means. Powdered eggs and watery juice, saved by the HI Express Cinnamon Buns.

Beach access was easy enough – just go out through the back door of the hotel, next to the elevators, and in the other corner of the parking lot there’s a path that takes you through a lot past the RV Homes next door, then you cross the street by the ocean and there you are. Not bad at all. The tiny hotel pool is cute but in a weird place-across the parking lot. We didn't make it there at all.

We drove south to Nags Head to have some seafood at our favorite spot which made the whole evening worthwhile.

Overall, we enjoyed our night there after a long, long drive. Wouldn’t want to stay a week, but for one night, it was totally fine.
