My husband called the hotel directly to make the reservation to be certain the person he spoke to had direct knowledge of what was available. He was told the only room available was handicap accessible (we did not require that) and non-smoking (we do require that). When we arrived, we were given a smoking room on the second floor that was disgusting. The room reeked so badly of smoke that it literally created a raw, burning feeling in my throat. If it weren't so chilly that night, I would have slept by the pool as there was no other room available in the Outer Banks. We spoke with another couple the next morning and they told us they were originally given that room and insisted the hotel move them. Thankfully, the manager moved us to another room for our second night which was a thousand times better. It was noticeably dated, but it was clean and we were so relieved to be out of the other room. My husband and I stay in hotels 6-10 times each year. I have never written to any company to complain, but I thought it was only fair to alert their corporate management about our sickening experience. They did not bother to email back. I am a member of the Holiday Inn Priority Club, but this experience coupled with the fact that management didn't care enough to respond has turned me off to ever staying in a Holiday Inn again.
