“Okay for a night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

We chose the hotel because it is pet friendly. We were in town for a wedding, so we only stayed one night. Overall it was okay and the location is very good. The hotel looks and feels old. It seems like everything is worn and the hotel shows its age. The room was okay, but there was nothing great or terrible about it. It could have been a bit cleaner or maybe just newer feeling. If I were staying for an entire week during beach season, I would look for something nicer or maybe newer.

Thank you for your review. We greatly appreciate your business and we do hope you will give us another opportunity to serve you. All of the hotels in our area are a little older with our property being one of the newest hotels on the beach. We are always working on upgrading our facility. This is a never ending job and something we do work hard at. We recently had all of the carpet replaced in all of the rooms on the floor you stayed on. We have installed new Simmons Beauty Rest mattresses in all of our rooms. We are currently working on several upgrades this winter including our corridors, rooms, lobby and breakfast area. We are always working to improve our facility as it is our goal for each and every guests stay to exceed their expectations.

Please feel free to contact me if I can further assist you. We would love to have the opportunity to provide accomodations for you in the future.

Sincerely,
Sherrie Cahoon

“Not worth the money”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

Let me first start off by saying I realize Travelodge is not a higher end hotel and that this is the off season. With that being said, I would never stay here again. We picked this location because they are pet friendly.

When you walk into the lobby, there is an immediate musty smell. The tables for breakfast are set up there. About 8 tables crammed into a little space. Front desk staff were friendly and they did allow us to check in two hours early. They also immediately supplied us with extra towels since there were three in the room and only towels for two.

The rooms left much to be desired. As soon as we walked in, the musty odor hit us in the face. We wrote this off to maybe the room had not been used in awhile. Now for the rest of the room....The curtains were torn, the bedspreads were beyond worn, the mattresses sunk to the middle, hot water was virtually non-existent, the furniture was worn and the room was dirty. There were papers behind the dresser and I don't think they had ever pulled anything out to vacuum under or behind it.

As for the continental breakfast, this left much to be desired. We arrived in the lobby at approximately 7:45. There were three donuts, a couple of pieces of bread, two triangles of frozen waffles, bagels that were wet (assuming this was from being frozen) and apples that had rotten spots in them. Needless to say, we passed and went down the street and ate breakfast. When we arrived back at the hotel, there was a family of four eating from what was there and not a thing had been replenished.

I’ll end by saying, the dog was happy. They did have a jar of dog biscuits at the front desk.

Thank you for taking the time to write your recent review. I am sorry that your visit did not meet your expectations. I wish that you had made us aware of your dis-satisfaction while staying with us. I can assure you we would have done everything possible to have made your stay more enjoyable. It is always our goal to exceed the expectations of each and every guest. We are ranked number 2 out of 18 properties here in Kill Devil Hills and we work very hard to deserve that ranking.

The room you were in was pet friendly and upon inspection we did find that someone's dog had torn the curtain. These are new curtains and it is ashame that some pet owners are not as responsible as most of our guest are. We will have to replace the drapes in that room. We do have new Simmons Beauty Rest mattresses in every room and we usually receive very positive reviews regarding these.

Our free continental breakfast consist of waffles, bagels, bread for toast, two cereals, grits, oatmeal, 3 types of donuts, oranges, and apples as well as coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milk and two juices. Due to limited kitchen space we regret that we are unable to provide a full hot breakfast. We do strive to provide a variety to have something that each guest will enjoy and we are always open to suggestions on ways to improve

Please know that we want your business and we work hard to try to provide the best services and accomodations possible. If you decide to give us another try and experience any issues while here we want to know about it while you are here so that we can correct the situation. We have someone at the front desk 24 hours a day who will be happy to assist you.

Sincerely,
Sherrie Cahoon

Just finished a most enjoyable stay at the Travelodge in Kill Devil Hills. I found clean accomodations, very friendly people and really excellent beds. Not often can you say you slept great at a hotel...but they have wonderful beds here. I have stayed at alot of OBX hotels but this one will be the one and only going forward.

“Best value on the Outer Banks!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

I first stayed at this hotel in September 2009 and was greatly impressed with it that I decided to stay again during a recent visit to the Outer Banks. The is place provides a great value for your money. Although it is not an oceanfront property, the hotel is located on Beach Road across from the beach (as well as a public access point). It is a very quick walk to the ocean. The rooms are not very large, but they do have a balcony as well as a fridge, ironing board and microwave. The linens and furnishings are clean and comfortable. Free wi-fi and cable TV are also provided along with the typical continental breakfast. The hotel also has a very nice lagoon-style pool with a few palm trees for those looking to avoid the crowded beach or take in an evening swim. This is also sone of the few hotels in the area that allows pets, which could be good or bad depending on your view. But even with the pets, the place is still very quiet and I got a good nights rest. Both times I stayed the check-in was very fast and the service was excellent. There are several restaurants and stores within a very short distance. Also across the highway is the Wright Brothers memorial. Although there are countless other hotels on the Outer Banks, I'd much rather stay here again than anyplace else while visiting the area. I'm already looking forward to staying again on my next trip down there.

“Update this place!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

The first room we had was absolutely filthy. Food on the carpet at the bed's edge. Behind the headboard was dirt and dust that had obviously been there for quite a long time. The first evening 2 spiders fell from the ceiling onto my bed. The next afternoon a palmetto bug as big as Shamu was crawling up the wall. At that point I went to check out as I couldn't stand it anymore. I was told that I had already been charged for the 2nd night since it was after 11:00 a.m. and he coudln't refund my money. He said I could call the manager on Monday (this was Thursday). In addition to the bug problems, the dated wallpaper in the bathroom was coming off the wall and was moldy..Grout in tub area was alsmot black it was so dirty. Nasty. We were moved to another room, which we inspected before agreeing to move. It was much nicer....clean, bathroom looked like it had been freshly painted. Tub area was very clean. The remainder of our stay was very nice. I appreciate that they are pet friendly as we were traveling with ours. I don't expect 5 Star at the price we were paying. However, I do expect clean. The front desk man tried explaining that since it was the off season, that they don't have enough cleaning staff. If that is the case, then the owner and manager should get their hands dirty and clean up the place. If you don't have the staff to keep it clean, then close it for the off season. Don't make your paying guests suffer because of understaffing.

Room Tip: Just check it out before you sign on the dottted line!

We are very sorry to hear your stay with us was not as pleasant as it could have been. We try our best to make our guests comfortable while they are with us, and we do our best to see that any problems are rectified in a timely manner. Your room, as described, was not up to your standards when you arrived. Had the front desk staff been made aware of the room’s condition, they could have moved you immediately and your stay with us might have been more pleasant. Our hotel carries a 72 hour cancellation policy because of the seasonal nature of the hotel business on the Outer Banks. It is, however, one of the most liberal on the beach with many hotels having 1 or 2 week cancellation policies. You did not speak to our staff until 3:30pm Thanksgiving Day. Keeping in mind that this was Thanksgiving weekend, we had our hands full preparing the hotel for the many guests arriving for the holiday and do make mistakes sometimes. This is not intended as an excuse, but we do try to give as many of our employees as much time with their families as possible at Thanksgiving and we do operate with minimal staff during this time. We are, however, delighted to hear that our staff was able to upgrade your room, that it was more in line with the standards we aim for, and that the remainder of your stay was more to your liking. We sincerely hope that you will stay with us again in the future and earn a nicer review. Thank you for your feedback.
