“My duck hunt”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

First off the Sea Ranch does need some work, but they are in the process of doing this. A friend and I stayed this past December while on a hunting trip. The room was spacous for two people, and the beds seemed to sleep just fine. Checking in was a breeze, and so was checking out. The shower worked great, good channels on the tv. And we were able to get a room on the bottom floor next to the parking lot. Which worked out great for us, so we could unload our stuff and tote it right to our room. The beach area seemed nice even though we didn't use it. And it wasn't that far away from everything. So going somewhere to eat or shop was easy. I would stay there again, and will next year on another hunting trip.

Room Tip: The rooms next to parking lot have a patio door you can use so you don't have to tote your stuff...

“sea ranch is not in good shape”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

The sea ranch is located on some beautiful beach front property. Meanwhile, my room was falling apart. The toliet was unstable. The shower was poor with exposed pipes and holes in the walls. The coffee maker did not work. On the up side, people were friendly and the bed was good. We paid $40/night which should be the most anyone pays, regardless of season for this relic.

Room Tip: use another hotel

“The way beach hotels shouldn't be built”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

We stayed at the Sea Ranch at the tail end of Hurricane Irene, and in a sense were lucky to find a room, as there didn't seem to be much availability in the Outerbanks. We only stayed for one night, as we just needed somewhere to crash before we were allowed to travel north thru Duck to get to our rental house.

Anyway, we were nicely received at the front desk - no complaints there. However, the hotel is pretty dingy and run down - has definitely seen better days. I'm sure the immediate proximity to the beach and the humidity and sand and salt don't help - therein lies the problem - the hotel was built quite literally ON the beach. I mean, you can't get any closer to the water than this hotel. It's a 5 story concrete and glass bunker from which, if you could jump far enough, you would land in the surf. They must have built this place before sensible zoning laws were established/enforced.

“Definitely Overpriced!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

2 other females and I (all of us between 25-30yrs old) stayed here for 2 nights on the wkd of our best friend's wedding. we were asked to stay due to our participation in the wedding, which was being held there on the beach and in the hotel's restaurant "The Pearl"

I swore to the other 2 ladies that I would do a tripadvisor review on this hotel to forewarn any travelers who are looking for quality at the beach! DON'T stay here

Before I go into details, I will just say this... "The Pearl" restaurant shouldn't be connected to such an old hotel, in need of upgrades and cleaning. The restaurant's food/services are great. They should be embarassed to be associated with the Sea Ranch.

WHEN TO STAY HERE:
We stayed during the wkd and it was busy, but never overcrowded. Obviously it would be ideal to stay here in the summer...

BREAKFAST:
Instead of the restaurant that is located within the hotel's blue print serving breakfast, they give you meal tickets to get food from Jolly Roger a block down the street. It was a short walk/drive, but annoying. And Jolly Roger's breakfast is alright, but nothing unique. And please do NOT eat their hash browns!

POOL:
It's indoors but not connected directly to the hotel, but on the premise. We never used it, due to the convenience of the beach.

ELEVATOR:
I assume the beachfront building has elevators, not sure on that though. We stayed on the first floor of the other building closest to the street.

ROOMS:
Spacious and filled with amenities (flat screen, fridge, etc) but the carpet was absolutely disgusting and the bathroom was designed with SUPER OLD pink tile lining the floor & walls and rusted tub/shower head. The faucet leaked all day/night. The sink area is also outside of the bathroom but carpeted, which makes the carpet even more disgusting right there. Directly after showering and cleaning my feet, I dryed them and then walked around the room for just 5 minutes. My feet were BLACK. I highly doubt they have ever shampooed that carpet. The porch and stairs to the little seated garden area was a bonus, though.

BEDS:
They were fine, comfortable. The comforters were definitely in need of upgrade though. I felt more like I was in a motel than a hotel. And for the price? Not an equal quality.

LOCATION:
perfect location, right on the beach. can't really beat it

Service:
average, no real complaints.

PRICE:
SO overpriced. I am a Hilton Silver Honors Member and consistently stay with Hilton family hotels and have spent much less for MUCH better quality and cleanliness. I was incredibly angry that we had to pay $10 extra per night for a 3rd person to be in the room, even though they boast that their rooms "room 4 people." Apparently, according to management, that is simply for 2 adults and 2 children. Hmm. And on top of that, if we had asked for a cot for our 3rd person, they would have charged an ADDITIONAL $10 per day for the cot. That's just crazy! So what exactly is the extra charge for the 3rd person covering, then? I've never heard of such a silly thing. I should have paid less $ to stay at the Hilton Garden Inn right down the street & then just driven the few blocks to get to the wedding at the restaurant. And don't even waste your money to get an ocean view! Those porches are completed enclosed with ugly glass encasing and you can't even really enjoy the beach atmosphere that a normal oceanfront view/balcony would allow. Tacky!

ATMOSPHERE AND CLEANLINESS:
Cleaned to the bare minimum and the carpets look to NEVER have been cleaned.

We were so disappointed in how much $ we paid to stay here. It was absolutely run down & overpriced. I'm definitely a beach goer but I will for sure never stay here again. What a waste of $! My friend is lucky that we love her so much, b/c we were SO close to just ditching out on her "request" to stay here...

“Will be seeing us again”

This place is great. The location is just what we were looking for. They comp breakfast a short walk to the jolly Roger, and a walk on the beach to the pier will take you to awful arthurs. Also the food lion is right up the road along w crabby fries take out. We had an ocean view room which was outstanding, clean rooms, quick and friendly housekeeping, not one bad thing to say. If you want an affordable place to stay, with amazing rooms, and barely a need to drive to anything this is the place to stay. They will definitely be seeing our faces again in the near future.
