“Good value for the price.”

We stayed at this motel over Labor Day Weekend, 2 adults, 2 kids. I wasn’t sure what to expect due to some of the reviews. We had a poolside room with 2 double beds. This is an older hotel and it showed but not necessarily in a bad way. The rooms were very small, no coffee pot, no phone. Bathroom was tiny with a standup shower only. Other than the size things were good. Room and pool were clean. Only steps to the ocean. Not a place I could stay for an extended period of time but for a weekend it was perfect being that very little time was spent in the room. Free wi-fi worked great. My only complaints would be the towel situation and the playground. We were only given 2 washcloths and 2 towels a day. We had 4 people in the room so every day we had to ask for more and most times they didn’t have them available and had to get them later. If you have kids the website says they have a play area but all that consist of is 1 swing and a small climb on slide. All in all it was a great place for the weekend for the money.

“Excellent Value, Great Location”

We stayed at Ocean House over Labor day weekend. I came with modest expectations based on other reviews. First, the price is excellent for the area. We had a poolside room with 2 queen beds. The room was snug, but the two of us had plenty of room to move around. The rooms have the larger "dorm-size" mini-fridges, a microwave, and there are plenty of grills outside. Our room had a full tub & shower, while our other friends had a shower stall. Our room also had a window AC unit. Free wi-fi was also available (and worked great!).

We honestly had no complaints. The room was safe & secure, the beds were firm, but comfortable. It took about 1 minute to walk to the beach, and the pool onsite was clean and cold. It is an older motel for sure, but with other area hotels at almost double the price, you really can't argue with the accommodations.

I would absolutely stay here again!

Room Tip: Oceanside rooms have a view of a giant sand dune, however the patio area is a little more private...

“Perfect dog friendly Motel with 50's style and Class”

We had orignially rented a vacation home in Frisco NC but Hurricane Irene put a halt to that the night before we were supposed to leave for our vacation. after Spending a day depressed about losing our vacation home we jumped into action and called many places in the same area but were not closed due to the storm. We found the Ocean View on the internet and loved the pictures, and when we called to see if they could accomadate my boyfriend and I and our 2 dogs, Sherry went to great lengths to find us a room. The area was very displaced due to the storm and their computers were down but she did a great job of finding us a room the remainder of our vacation.

The motel is older looks like it was built in the 50's and it had a quaintness about it that I really appreciated. The motel was right on the water but due to the sand dune in front of it the motel was spared for the most part. We were given a room on the 2nd floor and it was great, it had a back door that lead to a porch and each unit had 2 comfy blue plastic beach chairs in front of it that we could sit in and relax and enjoy the day. We could not see the ocean from our rooms but we it was a short walk right off that porch to the beach and there were picnic tables placed in front of our room on the sand in front of the dune and a platform that we could set up on and see the ocean from that.

Thanks to the fridge and microwave we picked up some finger foods at ate most of our meals outside at the picnic table. The rooms were basic and clean, the beds comfy (and both of us have back issues and were cozy) Everyone who worked there was really nice and made our dogs feel very welcome and they were very accomadating, when we took the dogs out for a few hours we would hang the clean room sign our the front door and every time we came back the room was cleaned, and fresh towels were left.

A lot of motels claim to be pet friendly but then you get there and you feel uncomfortable with your pet, this was not the case, everyone staying there had a dog and all the guests were friendly with each other and respectful of each other animals. Since we were on Ocean side and not pool side there seemed to be an air of privacy that was surprizing for a motel.

Sherry the manager was very sweet and accomadating and you can tell she works very hard at making sure everyone is happy and seems so genuine doing it. There was a grill in front of the ocean side rooms that anyone could use and that was such a bonus.

My only recommendation would be for them to add coffee makers to the rooms. That was the only draw back was that we had to get up and go get coffee and bring it back to the room. It would have been perfect had there been a coffee maker.

i definately would go back and I highly recommend it, i thought the price was a little on the high side being an older motel,Its not in the best shape and needs some work, but that is hard to judge because of Irene, I think they did a remarkable job just being open so soon after the storm. I think what made it seem expensive was primarily due to the pet fee. i think they should have a set pet fee per room not per animal.

We ended up having a very romantic vacation and did not have to leave our dogs at home thanks to Sherry and the gang at Ocean house. it's location was very convenient to restaurants and shops as well.

I would only get the ocean side rooms and would stay away from the poolside rooms I peeked into one when we made friends with someone else staying in one and they looked like little dungeons and didn't have the same privacy that the ocean side rooms had. The cleaning crew working at the motel did a great job and were also very friendly, everyone really seemed to enjoy our dogs.

The only other bad point other than the coffee maker was that the air condidtioner was really loud it took some getting used to.

Oh yeah the pictures on the internet were very accurate we knew exactly what we were getting for the price we were paying.

A no frills hotel, no coffeepot, no phone (I don't remember seeing a phone), no plug in the tub, and a very small tv (13 inches?). It was clean, on beach front and pet friendly.

Our problem was our bill - when we called they gave my husband an amount of $500.00 INCLUDING a charge for our dog. Our dog needed some test run so we ended up boarding him with our vet. We called the motel and told them that our dog would not be with us. Upon arrival we paid our bill which was $449.64 total which left us with a zero balance on the invoice we were given. Our stay was uneventful and when we left we gave the key to the manager and drove away.

Imagine our surprise the next day when we go to banking online and see an additional charge for $50.00. My husband called (we thought they were trying to charge us a pet fee) but the motel staff said the $50.00 was due because they did not charge us enough when we checked in. ---So --- buyer beware!~ -- I have filed a complaint with the BBB.

Room Tip: Because of the high dunes you really can't see the ocean from your room so do not pay extra for...

“Perfectly fine stay, owners were as nice and helpful as can be”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011

We were only going to be in OBX for one night and chose this place based on reviews, they were close to where my brother was staying and they allowed dogs (and with no extra fee or deposit!).

The good: Our room was SPOTLESSLY clean. And, despite the motel's age, it was clear that the owners put a lot of time and effort into the upkeep. Sure, there were a few "flaws," but nothing major. The owners were as nice and accomodating and helpful as could be. I called on our way down to see about the possibility of an early check-in and they went out of our way to make sure our room was done by the time we arrived. Quick, pleasant, helpful, can't ask for much more than that. The mattress was fine enough for a one-night stay in a hotel. I've had far worse in higher-end hotels. The pillows were pretty good for any hotel. I normally travel with my own pillows but forgot them this time and it turned out to be a non-issue for me, which is a rarity.

The "flaws": The room was spotless. One negative was that the electrical outlets were a little loose, if the table got bumped, the lamp would flicker or go out. Also, there was no outlet in the bathroom for my blowdryer. You have to go into the main room and that only had a multi-plug surge protector (not close to the mirror, either) but that, too, was so loose that my blowdryer kept coming unplugged. If we had needed to charge phones, etc, it may have been an issue but for the one night, it was ok. All of the rooms themselves are non-smoking but you can smoke on the porches. They said that ashtrays were provided but we didn't see any and there were butts (along with various other trash) everywhere. Someone should probably do a better job of picking up the grounds. Also, oceanfront is somewhat of a misnomer as you don't really have a view of the ocean, just the dune. However, you go out the back door, over the dune and there's the beach. But, if you're looking for a water view, there isn't one. Pool view is probably the best value here. Last, being an older motel, things are a little crooked and wobbly. Myself, I think it adds to the charm. Other people might think differently.

All in all, the motel was fine enough for a night, probably a long weekend. The location is good, the owners are great and the price is right. If you don't expect 4-star amenities, you won't be disappointed. If you keep your expectations in check with the reality of an older "mom and pop" beach motel, I think you'd be perfectly happy with your stay here. I'd stay here again if we were going down for a couple of nights. I prefer a little more space for long stays but for a night or 2, it was great.

Room Tip: Poolside rooms are probably the better value here.
