“Cambridge Cove at Bermuda Bay, give it a try!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

We stayed here in September 2011 after a stay in September 2010. I've read some of the recent negative reviews and don't share their sentiments. The unit we stayed in this time was very nice. Well decorated and even had a finished basement with extra bedding, perfect for kids, that we were not expecting. The bedding in this unit was more comfortable than the unit last year but some of the furnishings didn't suit parties over 4 or so (we had seven). There needed to be a little more furniture in the living room space and more kitchen utensils and such but no major concerns.

I think the key to Cambridge Cove is to realize it isn't a hotel. Each unit is individually owned, decorated and stocked. You can definitely tell how much the owners put in to the unit and whether or not previous renters have been respectful of the property. It could be a little clearer that when you reserve this property, you need to call the 800 # to Kees on the day of check-in to get your unit number and keycode. If you need better directions, honestly that is part of your own responsibility. The Outer Banks is a large area and many things can be hard to find.

If you check-in and are truly unhappy with the unit you're given, call Kees. You deserve to be happy on your trip, within reason obviously.

Off my soapbox. Love the pool!!

“Sad.”

Our family (kids aged 6 and 9) found this property by way of TripAdvisor and we felt that the feedback showed a reasonably priced condo for our August 2011 stay. The reviews here are pretty favorable. However, our experience was very disappointing.

This was our first trip to the Outer Banks (we'll definitely be returning!). Upon arrival on a Sunday, the "clubhouse" was closed. A sign on the door indicated a check-in phone number. Very quickly, we had our combination code for the front door. The property is not necessarily high traffic and seems to have a balance of owners as well as vacation renters. Not having staff on a Sunday was a bit "chilly" but understandable.

The front door was up a flight of stairs to the second level, where my wife came back down to open the automatic garage door. Suprise! The remote for the door was missing. Aside from being an annoyance (the up-down trek to get our car in), it was a security concern as well. We contacted the number right away...because we also had a massive pile of dirty linens at the base of the staircase from the previous occupants. The property manager arrived in less than 15 minutes to scoop up the laundry (giving some excuse that the contracted company should have been back to get it). Fine. Well, we mentioned the missing remote for the garage and he replied that he had four at the office and he would return in less than an hour with a programmed remote. He did not.

The next morning, we stopped in to visit the now open clubhouse. We also wanted to let them know that the unit was pretty filthy. The children's bare feet quickly turned dark after their bath....evidently, the carpets and hard floors were not routinely cleaned. Three people were in the clubhouse from the staff. A woman behind the "desk", another man seated at the desk, and the guy who took our laundry and promised to get us the garage remote. Nobody acknowledged me or attempted to greet me. When I recognized the other guy, I asked him about the remote. He said that he didn't have any and would need to buy a new one at WalMart. It was at this moment that I knew they had no interest in anything but excuses. (they also told my wife that they would be up to clean the unit that day). It never happened.

We spent the remainder of our stay going up and down stairs to get our car in the garage. On our third day, we saw our faithful property manager bobbing up and down in an inner-tube at the pool. Thanks, pal!

The unit had decent space for us with reasonable ammenities. There's a tiny TV in the family room and the couch was clearly broken. The property appears to be about 5 years old and is located close to a mile from the beach. It is an absolute shame that they obviously don't take care of the property because it could be very nice. Previous mentions of the grounds are accurate. It's in sad shape with weeds growing all over in planting beds and landscape rocks. On our last day, a lawn crew came through and ran their mowers over clearly dormant grass and cut the sporadic weeds. Tremendous waste. The videos and pictures that they produced are staged. I laughed when I saw them after our stay.

We will return to the Outer Banks. We will not even consider Cambridge Cove at any price. Lazy and shoddy customer service is unacceptable. Kees Vacations should be embarrassed if they know. There are too many other options that we will look into. Our stay did not ruin our trip, but it becomes the first thing we talk about to friends.

I'd look elsewhere.

“Will not ever go back”

We stated here last Aug to extend our trip, we rented a home but wanted to get there a few days early. The place was okay, I would not say clean, several bugs and spiders in the house, kitchen was dirty and dishwasher was still filled with dirty dishes. On the last day, Sunday a storm rolled through and the house actually got hit by lighting. It actually put a whole through the roof of the townhome. I understand this is something that was not controlled, but how everything was handled after was a disappointment. The number that was provided for maintence issues was a toll free number, I called and was questioned by the operator, she requested my reservation number and the email for confirmation. I advised she needed to be more concerned that there was whole in the house and to send a maintence person, asap. Once this person arrived, the fire dept was called and we had to vacate the property. This happened quite early in the morning about 7am. The electric was knocked out by the lighting, it actually blew out the fuse box in the house along with the rest of the homes on the same transformer. We were not compensated for anything, I am not saying we should have got our money back, but we had to vacate prior to check in, could not make breakfast because the electric was out, we could have at least been compensated for this. I was aslo very suprised no one contacted us after the incident, it was all handled very poorly.

“Townhouse and lodging was ok but probably won't be back”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2011

After reading all the reviews and viewing the pictures from the website we decided to stay in a townhouse over memorial day weekend. As previous reviews mentioned, the directions are not adequate and we guessed our way into the development. Luckily we found it on the first try since it was late at night and we were all very tired. The check-in was great since we only needed a code. At night the area and townhouse looked good and seemed clean. We did find a few cockroaches in the basement and one in the bedroom though. In the daylight we soon realized that the location wasn't perfect. The development is not finished and there is one set of townhomes that was never finished. You can see windows have been broken and some boarded up. Plus one of the townhomes had an open door and a random car parked out front. It made me a little nervous that there were possibly people squatting in the building.
The pool was good but our kids actually seemed to enjoy the beach more. Our kids are 3 and 2 so I was surprised that they were more interested in the pool. The guy working at the pool was very helpful and friendly. The pool does not open until 10am which wasn't convenient since our kids are up at 6am and ready to go.
You can walk to the beach and it's only about a mile. So the location isn't bad. I don't think we'll be back since the development just gave us an uncomfortable/depressing feeling since it was not finished and starting to look run down.

“Great stay - Feels like home, but with a beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2010

Stayed in Bermuda Bay in August for 3 nights. I didn't stay in the Cambridge Cove town homes, but instead booked one of the separate houses in Devonshire Place, just on the other side of the pool from the town homes. What a great place, plenty of space, a garage and a great private deck area in the back. The unit didn't feel like a sterile hotel, but more like a beach house. But the good thing here was we didn't have to book a full week. We could stay as many days as we wanted, so it really was a good value. The place was bigger than I expected and had a big playroom upstairs, so the kids could play without being right under our feet.

Outside the house, the pool was great, the kids loved all the play areas there. I will have to say the grounds looked kind of neglected, and the development isn't finished, so there are a bunch of vacant lots. they ought to clean that up. Aside from that I was impressed and will be back next year.

It was a short drive to the beach, and we even walked there one day, so its close enough.
