“Big rip off”

Went to Mountain High Lodge for a romantic getaway. Made advanced reservations and used credit card. At check in they gave us the wrong room number as we were trying to unlock the door we learned that the room was preoccupied. The room we stayed in was the deluxe with gas log fireplace and the room was $120. 00 for one night. When we recieved the credit card statement they had charged a fee of $791.00. The lodge manager claims we damaged the logs and he had to replaced some parts in the unit. The gas logs were burning while we were there and we had no problem with them except that the remote control would not shut the unit off as we were vacating the room. The maid was two doors down so we left the logs burning as we thought she would know how to shut them off..Management claims that the guests that stayed after us could not get the logs to burn therefore we have to have damaged them..We have pictures that were taken in the room that clearly shows the logs burning with the dates and time on the camera. This is currently under investigation by the credit card. company

“Nice Place, Great Value, Perfect Location”

My wife and I enjoyed our annual pre-Christmas vacation in Highlands, NC this year. We have visited Highlands several times but have never stayed overnight. With no sources for recommendations (except TripAdvisor)and without any knowledge of the hotels, lodges, and B&Bs, we selected the Mountain High Lodge for our two night stay (Thursday and Friday -- December 2 & 3).

We found the Mountain High Lodge ideally suited for our mini-vacation. Located on Main St., the Mountain High Lodge is within easy walking distance to the downtown shops and resturants. However, one point should be made. The lodge sits on a hill (providing visitors with a nice view of town and the surrounding area). The hill may present a problem to elderly and/or physically challenged visitors, but with a lot of parking in town those not able to make the trek up the hill can easily make the drive.

We stayed in room # 50 which is the end unit on the second (top) floor in the building facing Main Street. The room was equipped with a wood burning fireplace. Split wood and kindling is provided. To make things a little easier we picked up firestarters at the Ace hardware store across the street. With overnight temps in the twenties, we enjoyed a fire each night and also in the mornings. By being on the top floor and in the end unit we didn't hear a peep out of anyone.

The continential breakfasr is served from 7:00 - 11:00 AM. I'm not a breakfast kinda of guy, so I only went for coffee, but I noticed several families with small children enjoying the breakfast each morning. With a selection of cereals, muffins, and fruit the breakfast would be a good value-add for families.

Before you book a room, please understand that this is "lodge" and not a luxury hotel (that's on the oppoiste end of Main Street). Our room at the High Mountain Lodge was clean, very comfortable, and perfect for our weekend get-away.

“CLEAN, INEXPENSIVE, CLOSE WALK TO SHOPS,DELUXE CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2010

Hotel is right in town, easy walk to everything. Rooms were clean and the cheapest in town. Inviting, cozy. We are very happy with our choice. Evening reception with wine and cheese plate, and deluxe continental breakfast was also a plus. Some of the food they had were Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches, eggs, grits, oatmeal, pancakes, cereal, 4 kinds of breads, alot of spreads, and fruit to name a few and it runs from 7am-11am. We will be back. The only minor complaint is that this hotel could use alittle updating with wallpaper and suxh and I think it may be time to buy some new beds (slant alittle) but that would not stop me from returning!

“A GREAT place to relax”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2010

We were looking for a couple of days of relaxing and found this reasonably priced place. It was adequate as far as size of room. We had a 2 bed room with refrigerator, TV. The service was excellent and was not very crowded. Actually this was the slow season, 9/1-9/24. They had a very good continental breakfast each morning and wine and cheeze each evening at a sister hotel across the street. The setting was in the hills of Highland just at the edge of town. We could walk to everything within minutes. There was a 'shopping center' nearby that was actually walkable as well. Had a grocery store, Chinese rest. and a subway as well as some art stores, etc, small but adequate. We really enjoyed our stay and would do it again. We spent our time driving around the area looking at the many waterfalls in the area.
