Happy, happy, happy. That's how I feel after just one night at the Jameson Inn in Hickory, NC. I'm a budget traveler, who has stayed at hotels and motels (and b&b's) across the US. Let me tell you, it's hard to find nice accommodations at a budget price. It was a pleasant surprise to find out how much you get for your money at this motel (and a very reasonable price, at that! Full disclosure: I used a coupon from a local hotel guide, so it was a bit cheaper than the usual price.
Here's the review: Clean room - smells clean, looks clean, is clean (don't you just hate those hotels that have musty rooms, or who overdo it with the scented carpet powder?). Toilet that actually works properly (unlike a different hotel I stayed at this weekend.) Good water pressure, good hot shower. Comfy bed, with tons of pillows. Nice, warm room with good heat/AC unit (another personal pet peeve of mine are the musty/mold-ridden, ready-to-die, gonna-give-you-a-sinus-infection, heating/AC units in most motels). TV that works properly (again, unlike other budget hotel "Economy", which I stayed at this weekend). Big ol' comfy armchair. Good lighting and attractive furnishings (personal pet peeve of mine is how there are never enough lamps or good lighting in hotel rooms). Plus other great amenities in the room: microwave, fridge, iron & ironing board, blowdryer, toiletries -- all of which I had occasion to use.
The assorted staff were exceedingly pleasant and friendly, saying hello, inquiring about my stay, agreeing to a late checkout, letting me eat a late breakfast. Oh, and about that breakfast? Another happy surprise. BIG, clean breakfast area, plenty of seats, and a large range of foods to choose from: sausage biscuits, cold cereal, hot cereal, instant grits, instant oatmeal, fresh fruit, bagels, muffins, breads, HOT HOMEMADE WAFFLES, and all the fixings. Plus, good coffee (24/7), full range of teas (incl. green teas), hot chocolate, juice, milk....
I am just amazed at how much good stuff they include with the budget price of this hotel. Felt like I was staying somewhere more expensive! The reception area/lounge was inviting, there is free internet in the lobby, and a big ol' TV in the breakfast area. Wish I'd been here when the pool was open, it looked inviting as well -- and they even have a clubhouse. And there's also a fitness center.
The property is very well-lit and feels safe at night (and since I am a woman who travels alone, that is much appreciated). It was quiet at night, even though it is fairly close to I-40. This location is also convenient to many restaurants, including a Cracker Barrel right next door. And downtown Hickory is only a 5-10 minute drive.
Happy, happy, happy! I'll be back. Jameson Inn, thanks for making my music weekend in Hickory really great!
Room Tip: I stayed in Room 100 (a corner room at the back, ground level) and found it to be just fine.
