“Lovely grounds...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2006

Although we arrived quite late, we were greeted hospitably by the owner who offered a drink after showing us our room. The house is a sprawling ranch style home with a large living room, beautiful dining room and pleasant enclosed porch. The dining room walls were extraordinarily refurbished by the owners from trees on the property destroyed in a hurricane. Clearly a great deal of time and care had been put into creating these walls which included a hidden doorway that led to the owners' space. Unfortunately, the rest of the house lacked that level of upkeep. The living room had oddly placed, thin strips of wood meant to look like timbers, I suppose, but were broken in some places and all lacked the desired effect. Our bedroom was very small and had a disturbingly musty smell that permeated the bed clothes. Opening the window did little to reduce the smell, and the window air conditioner was too noisy to permit hearing the tv or to be used as 'white noise.'
On a more positive note, breakfast, served on one long table on the porch, was delicious and where the owners seemed most comfortable. The property is lovely and following breakfast, guests who had not been introduced in anyway by the hosts, wandered separately about the yard seeking something to do before departing. This was not the experience we had anticipated.

  • Liked — Breakfast was quite good.
  • Disliked — The room was very uncomfortable; small and musty.
  • Tips/Secrets — Choose another B & B.

“Buyer Beware”

Do not accept the Floral Room unless you like confined spaces. This room is less than half the size in the sample picture and has insufficient room for a suitcase. We were disappointed that the jacuzzi was smaller than a standard bathtub, was located in a nook one foot away from the bed, and the jets did not work. Clean rooms did not seem to be a priority as we both had allergic reactions to the dust caked on the overhead fan, curtains and walls. However, the owners seemed friendly.

“Tudor House - comfortable and inviting”

I recently attended a conference that was being held at the Biltmore Inn and I refuse to pay Biltmore prices for a hotel--so I searched for something else and found the Tudor House Bed and Breakfast.
The Tudor House is located in Fletcher, NC, about 5 miles from the Asheville airport. The entrance to the Tudor House is through a subdivision, but once you drive down the white gravel driveway and into the trees, you might as well be a million miles from anywhere. Obviously, this was an old house with lots of property--the property was sold but the house remains intact.
The owners, June and Alvan, have turned the house into a gracious and welcoming B&B. They are from England and have capitalized on the English theme throughout the house.
My room, the Forest room, was a corner room with 5 windows. There was a comfortable queen bed and the bathroom had a double jacuzzi. The room was simply furnished but did have a TV and air conditioning. (The main part of the house and common rooms are not air conditioned).
Breakfast is served on the back (enclosed) porch. Alvan and June accomodated our need to eat a little earlier than usual in order to get to the conference on time. We had juice, fresh fruit with yogurt, toast, french-pressed coffee, and quiche (day 1) or cheese souffle (day 2). Breakfast was tasty and filling.
There is an inground pool in the backyard and I enjoyed an evening swim after the conference.
One evening, a group of us held an informal wine and cheese cocktail hour in the living room before heading out to dinner. The owners supplied the glasses and corkscrew, but we supplied the beverages and food.
I am not a B&B connossieur so I have little to compare the Tudor House to. I found it to be clean, comfortable, and homey. One friend said she was surprised they served the same fruit cocktail two days at breakfast--in her experience, B&Bs are "fiercely competitive" about their breakfasts. Maybe so, but the fruit was fresh and was an assortment of berries and a dollop of yogurt. I was happy to eat it twice!
Overall, I was pleased with the Tudor House and would stay there again if I need to travel to Asheville for business or pleasure.
One drawback for business travelers: no internet access.
