“Genuine English charm in North Carolina”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2009

While searching for accomodations on the Web for our motorcycle trip to Norh Carolina we came across the Tudor House Bead & Breakfast. It sounded different and inviting so we made our reservation. We could not have been more satisfied with the B&B and Alvan and June, the wonderful English couple who run it. It was quaint, very relaxing and full of Old World charm tucked away in a great wooded location close to town. They went out of their way to provide great service, along with a great sense of humor. We found ourselves looking forward to breakfast each morning for both the fantastic food (including French pressed coffee) as well as the great conversation with them and the other guests. The Garden Room was wonderful, with a very nice king-sized bed, wireless Internet service and two-person Jacuzzi tub in the bath. Alvan was out to greet us the moment we arrived, offering help with the luggage as well as garage space for our motorcycles while there. We will definitely keep the Tudor House at the top of our list when traveling again to this part of the country. Great place! Great people!!

“A lovely bed and breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2007

My sister wanted to find a bed and breakfast in Asheville, NC to accomodate thirteen relatives. She was planning a surprise 40th birthday party for her husband, and she needed to find lodging for thirteen people. We both called several bed and breakfasts, lodges, and resorts in the Asheville area, but we couldn't find a place to accomodate us. Perhaps our biggest obstacle was finding an accomodation that would allow children. We had a two - year old and a ten- year old in our group. I finally looked outside of Asheville for more options. I found the Tudor House, which is located in Fletcher, NC. I phoned the B&B, and explained our circumstances. June, the innkeeper, was very gracious, and didn't have any reservations for the weekend we requested. We were able to book all of her rooms, and the children were welcome seeing how we were the only guests that weekend. They even assisted my sister with some of her party - planning arrangements! The B&B was easy to find, and it is located in the front of a subdivision. We were surprised to turn into a neighborhood, but their gravel driveway leads you into a totally wooded and private area. My husband and I stayed in the Forest Room and it was comfortable. There was a Queen bed, a TV and DVD player, and a large jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. It wasn't a huge room, but there were beautiful views of the backyard. We were able to peak in all the other rooms, and I guess there were 2 rooms that were a little small. One room did open to the bathtub on the far side of the room, but the bathroom was private. Each room was tidied everyday by a housekeeper. Breakfasts were fine. One morning we ate fruit salad and french toast, and the next day we ate fruit salad, homemade bread, and quiche. There were various jams and honey on the table as well.
Alvin, the innkeeper, usually chatted with everyone during breakfast which was nice. All in all I think everyone enjoyed themselves.
FYI - My husband and I stay at B&B's frequently and the only true difference I noticed was that there were no locks on the doors to the rooms. It didn't bother me because relatives were staying in each room, but normally I wouldn't have liked this arragement. All of the bathrooms are private, but they do not have locks either.
Also, mention to the innkeepers if you have dietary needs. Some B&B's do not post their breakfast menu or do a buffet. My husband hates mushrooms, and occasionally he is served a mushroom quiche which he won't eat.

  • Liked — That we were all accomodated comfortably, and that we were only about 6 miles from Asheville.

“Don't Stay Here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2007

The grounds were beautiful. That is the only positive comment I can honestly say.
We stayed in The Garden Room which was the priciest of their rooms.
The room was small and musty, and there was no internet access (even though it was advertised in their brochure). The breakfast was sorely disappointing - I was never asked about my dietary needs, and even though I did not eat the breakfast, was never offered anything different. The breakfast on day one was a quiche stuffed with bacon, on day two, it was quiche stuffed with canadian bacon and mushrooms - I don't eat meat.
On the 2nd day there, we came back to our room to find that our room had been cleaned, but that our nice comforter, king sized pillows and throw pillows had been taken away. We never saw them again. The comforter was replaced with a down comforter covered with a ripped duvet.
On the 3rd morning (we stayed 3 nights), we were disappointed to find that the owners had slipped a receipt under our door and did not see us off or tell us thanks. In fact, the receipt was addressed as "Dear Both." I don't think they even knew both of our names.

“Lovely grounds...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2006

Although we arrived quite late, we were greeted hospitably by the owner who offered a drink after showing us our room. The house is a sprawling ranch style home with a large living room, beautiful dining room and pleasant enclosed porch. The dining room walls were extraordinarily refurbished by the owners from trees on the property destroyed in a hurricane. Clearly a great deal of time and care had been put into creating these walls which included a hidden doorway that led to the owners' space. Unfortunately, the rest of the house lacked that level of upkeep. The living room had oddly placed, thin strips of wood meant to look like timbers, I suppose, but were broken in some places and all lacked the desired effect. Our bedroom was very small and had a disturbingly musty smell that permeated the bed clothes. Opening the window did little to reduce the smell, and the window air conditioner was too noisy to permit hearing the tv or to be used as 'white noise.'
On a more positive note, breakfast, served on one long table on the porch, was delicious and where the owners seemed most comfortable. The property is lovely and following breakfast, guests who had not been introduced in anyway by the hosts, wandered separately about the yard seeking something to do before departing. This was not the experience we had anticipated.

  • Liked — Breakfast was quite good.
  • Disliked — The room was very uncomfortable; small and musty.
  • Tips/Secrets — Choose another B & B.

“Buyer Beware”

Do not accept the Floral Room unless you like confined spaces. This room is less than half the size in the sample picture and has insufficient room for a suitcase. We were disappointed that the jacuzzi was smaller than a standard bathtub, was located in a nook one foot away from the bed, and the jets did not work. Clean rooms did not seem to be a priority as we both had allergic reactions to the dust caked on the overhead fan, curtains and walls. However, the owners seemed friendly.
