“Ok ... low-end Hilton”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

I guess this would be a "middle of the road" review. Hotel is clean, comfortable but facilities/rooms are dated and looks like it is badly in need of a refresh.

The hotel is in a convenient location near Duke University and Hospital. Quiet location, about 5 mins off the main "drag" of Durham. Easy parking, lots of space. Lobby is large and grand. Lobby area has at least 2 restaurants, including one that serves a decent continental breakfast for $10.

Downside ... rooms look like they are from the 90s. AC works but is noisy and keeps you awake at night. Bathroom tiles are old with some cracked/rust stains. Lamps very dated. Furniture so-so.

Lobby staff is nice an friendly. Probably the brightest part of this stay.

My overall impression is that this is a middle of the road Hilton. Would not stay again given the selection around.

“Not your typical Hilton”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

We stay at Hiltons all the time so when we travelled to Durham to visit our daughter for Thanksgiving, I did not do much research about this hotel. I should have. The good : The lobby is lovely and so are the staff .

The bad: Although the hotel seemed quite empty, we were assigned the very last room on the 6th floor (626) . We never saw another person on our floor during our stay there so not really sure why this was.
We were exhausted from driving, else we would have requested a room change because there was a stale foul smell (like a locker room) in the hallway just as you approach the room, it was a real turn off.

The TV had very bad reception too - the picture would disintegrate after a few minutes on any channel, and the heat would click on and make lots of noise. Seems the hotel is under renovation which I was notified about during check-in (wish there was something on the Hilton website about that when I MADE the reservation.) It wasn't the worst but not what you expect from Hilton.

“An easy stop from the road.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2011

We saw this hotel as we traveled north on I-85, so it was a welcome sight after many hours on the road. The room was large, the bed most comfortable, and we had a great sleep. Clean room and very nice amenities. The parking lot is easy to access.

“Close to Duke, but just OK.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2011

We were visiting Duke, and chose the Hilton after the Washington Duke was full. The Hilton was my next choice because they had room service, a must for me. I was happy to see the 99% Sanitation certificate afer hearing that Durham is on "the list" for highest bedbug infestations. Gross. I had no issues with the cleanliness of the room, bedding etc. The door to the room, however, looked like there had been an attempted break in at some point, as the wood was chipped out around the deadbold. There was a peephole in the door, and a sign cautioning you to use the peephole A little disconcerting for a mother/daughter traveling alone. Almost made me afraid to go get ice.

So...room service. We got pork sandwiches, and a bowl of soup. Sandwiches were pretty good. For breakfast (room service), I ordered the All American with eggs, bacon, and substituted pancake, which caused some consternation. $3 for the sub, which was fine, but they couldn't understand why I didn't just order a short stack for $11.95. There were about 8 slices of bacon, and the side of sausage my daughter ordered was 6 links. North Carolinians must really love their pork!

The biggest negative of our stay was the a/c. The compressor came on every 5 minutes and cycled for a minute or less. In the middle of the night I figured out that I ran the fan on "on" instead of "auto" the noise would be disguised a little bit, but my daughter and I both had fitful nights of sleep. The front desk was interested in our comment about the a/c at checkout, and assure us it wasn't normal. The hotel is apparently undergoing some much needed renovation as we received a letter under the door apologizing for any construction mess and noise. It is surely needed. Front desk staff and servers all extremely pleasant.

If you're visiting Duke, this is a close option, just a couple of miles away from campus.

Dear 3 Tonkies,
Thank you for taking the time to post a review about your recent stay with us. It is true that we are very close (2 miles) to Duke University and Duke Medical Center and also offer a complementary shuttle service within a five mile radius of the hotel. It is also true that we love pork in North Carolina! We believe that a Hilton Breakfast starts with a hardy portion of quality farm fresh products while offering a tremendous value to our guest. Thank you again for sharing your experiences and I look forward to welcoming you again soon.

“Awful”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

Unfamiliar with the area we booked this Hilton. We booked a room with two queen beds, arrived and were told we wouldn't be able to check for several hours. The Duke football team was staying on our floor and the room had one double bed. The desk reported that we had booked a "queen suite" a reference to the mini fridge, sink and pull-out double sofa. The hotel needs updating.
