“Average for this type of hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We stayed in this hotel recently and chose it for the price and location. We had a family member who needed testing at UNC. We are over the age of 50 and so we opted for the senior rate of $49. This is a bare bones hotel as several people stated on the reviews. For this type of hotel (being low cost and near a highway) it came close to what we expected. We brought our own old coffee perculator and our own coffee. We knew that no hairdryer was there from previous reviews. Aside from our expectations what we didn't expect was the lumpy mattresses. You either had to sleep in he "ditch" or on the "hump" and the pillows are lumpy too. Since our room had 2 beds, my husband took one and I took the other. I tried the hump first and then decided that the ditch was better. This hotel really needs to replace the mattresses. If a rating of 2 1/2 were available, I would have given it that instead of just 2. IT's somewhere between poor and average. The hotel is average for it's type, the mattresses and pillows are poor. However, it was clean. No dead bugs (mentioned in other reviews). The jury is still out about whether we will use this hotel again or not. You can hear highway traffic, but for $49, the cheapest rate in Chapel Hill that I could find, it was in our budget.

Room Tip: Ask them if they replaced the mattresses recenlty. IF not, you may want to go elsewhere.

“Nice low budget place”

The Red Roof Inn in Durham is a good, decent hotel. Nice rooms, good beds; sometimes that's all you need, right? Location is also nice, as long as you have a car. Lady at the front desk was very helpful and friendly. Finding the hostel was a little hard though, since the entrance is a little off road, but that's it. Don't expect anything very special, but this hotel is a nice place to stay if you visit Chapel Hill for a day (what we did). Prices are very, very good, so if I ever go back there, I'll book again.

“Very Pleasant Surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

We were a bit nervous after booking by phone enroute. But the place turned out to be quite nice, with very capable and friendly desk clerks, a nice lobby with coffee available, and a clean and perky room. Yes, if you aren't looking carefully for the sign it's easy to miss the motel since it's really one street off Chapel Hill Blvd., but that also makes it a bit quieter. The free wifi was great, and the accent walls in the bed and bathrooms were a nice upgrade. In fact, the decor was very pleasing. We don't really like the little packs of shampoo either, but there were two of them which was plenty, and with the trade off in the price of the room, it was worth it-- but bring your own hairdryer. Not having onsite breakfast is no problem -- hit Bob Evans or Panera Bread just down a couple blocks from the motel.

Room Tip: Bottom floors go first but there is an elevator. Upper floors can be noisy.

“Good location. Clean room.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2011

This is a very convenient location for a stay in the Chapel Hill or Durham area. Located just off I-40, with lots of businesses and restaurants just across I-40. The rooms are small but clean. The property accepts pets and does not charge extra, which is a big plus for us as we often travel with our small dog. This is a no-frills motel with low prices, Quiet location, surrounded by trees.

“Good value, tricky entrance”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2011

The location is good, the rooms are adequate, and the price is very reasonable. Free pets and free WiFi. No breakfast and small shampoo. Only complaint is getting to the place. Turn on Eastowne Dr. off US-15/US-501, then take the unmarked access road on the left. If you're not careful and turn after you see the hotel, you may end up be on the I-40 onramp and will have to go a couple of miles before you can turn around. GPS is not to be trusted. The hotel really needs to get some signs out.
