I stayed at this hotel because it was located close to a job interview and was inexpensive.
The lobby smelled like mothballs, which did not give a good first impression.
My room door did not open - the key card worked, but the door stuck. When I inquired at the front desk I was told "you're doing it wrong." The front desk staff accompanied me upstairs, and also could not open the door. After about ten attempts the door opened, but it stuck on the carpet and could barely be opened; the staff said "well just jiggle the handle to open it," and walked away.
The room itself was filthy. There were appalling stains on the chairs, the carpet was covered in dirt, there were holes in the bathroom walls, and there were crumbs in the bed.
I called the Days Inn customer service, and they filed an official complaint, and said I would hear from the manager in 3 business days.
In the morning it took a long time to open the door, because it stuck on the carpet on the inside, which was clearly a terrible fire hazard. I insisted upon a new room, and was given one that was equally dirty, although the door opened properly. The ceramic soap dish in the shower was broken, leaving a very sharp edge that I cut myself on twice in the shower.
I never heard from the hotel manager. I followed up with the Days Inn customer service line, only to be told that the corporation had no role in day-to-day management, and I had to direct all communication to the franchisee. It has been over two weeks and I have not hear from the franchise manager. Days Inn continues to refuse to take responsibility for their franchises' filthy and unsafe hotel.
This is a company that does not stand by their product and does not offer appropriate customer service. It's not worth the money, there are plenty of reasonably priced hotels in Durham other than the Days Inn. Stay at one of them instead.

Thank you staying with us for 3 days. I have been managing hotels for the last 30 years and the extend of of your complain was quite amazing. The only problem i saw in the room you stayed in was that the door was hard to open. Since we had just installed new carpet , doors are a little hard to open and this happens in any hotel. There were no stains on the chairs , no crumps on the bed and the carpet was surely not dirty. I totally inspected the room since you called and registered a huge complain with days inn. There were no holes in the bathroom wall, they have just been painted. Well after staying 3 days in a renovated room with a 42inch plasma tv you got a refund and days inn charged my company $160.00 fine. Well what can i say !!!. Not only that since tripadvisor does not varify complains, we the hotliers have to suffer the publicity and we never win.
