We stayed five nights at Lasseter’s Landing B&B at the end of December 2006. This is a very fine, new and modern B&B with great hosts – Betty & Gregg. The B&B is directly on the waterfront of Albemarle Sound with only two guest rooms which are on the second floor and both of which have great views of the Sound. A delightful reading/sitting room separates the two bedrooms. The sitting room has a small bar set up with a microwave, mini-fridge, countertop and sink. A modest supply of utensils and snacking-ware are available.
Each guest room has a very nice private bath. A good-sized balcony overlooking the water and available to all guests is off the sitting room and fronts one of the bedrooms. The other bedroom has a large window overlooking the sound. A set of French double doors in the downstairs foyer separates the hosts’ living area from the stairs up to the guest rooms and allows for quiet and discreet coming and going.
The guest rooms are comfortably sized with nice furniture, appointments and decorations. There is a large closet and a suitcase stand in the room. A TV with built in VCR and satellite service was enhanced by a large library of popular movie videos in the sitting room for guests to draw from. The bathroom was well-stocked with nice towels. The shower was pleasant and hot water was plentiful. Since our visit was during the winter we only needed heat (forced air) which was adjustable by a single thermostat in the sitting room serving the entire upstairs. We changed the thermostat as we needed and were comfortable throughout our stay.
The breakfasts were wonderful. Gregg has a storehouse of fantastic recipes of all types of breakfast items. We had delightful fruit appetizers, baked rolls, biscuits or muffins and delicious entrees. When Gregg learned that one of us was a morning coffee addict we had a pot of fresh hot coffee waiting in the sitting room when we awoke each morning. That was much appreciated and allowed us to savor coffee while looking out over the Sound before we came down for breakfast. Betty and Gregg are very genial hosts and we spent each morning in lively and fun conversation. We’re sure that Gregg and Betty would respect those who prefer a quiet and private breakfast.
There is one important fact for guests to be aware of. The town of Columbia and Tyrell County are quite rural. There are VERY FEW dining choices in a 30 – 40 mile radius of the B&B. Those seeking varied and quality dining options should adjust their expectations accordingly. The purpose of our visit was to explore the numerous wildlife refuges in the area using the B&B as a base. We stayed out all day until dark and were tired in the evening. We were satisfied grabbing sandwiches or simple meals at night before collapsing in our rooms. The generous and tasty breakfasts carried us almost the entire day with maybe an occasional snack in the afternoon.
In summary, Lasseter’s Landing B&B is a wonderful, fairly-priced, small B&B in a pretty setting. The breakfasts are excellent and the hosts superb. With the single caveat about dining options in mind, we highly recommend the place. We had a great time!
