“Had a very nice time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We were pleasently suprised and had a great time at the Super 8 Charlotte University site. There were a few little flaws but overall, the room was comfortable, clean and neat, the staff was excellent and the location was safe. We booked 3 rooms, one of our party arrived a few days before us, and she was well taken care of. My niece 25 says " I felt like I was in someones house and I was comfortable."

“Never Again! - Why is this location still in business?”

The only good thing about this hotel was that it was close to the highway. They also had vending machines, that had certain items in it like ice cream, for my son to eat. The downside to this hotel, they only had 1 washer and 1 dryer! There were bugs (yes, all types including roaches) in my room. The hallway felt like a sauna. The toilet seat looked like it was taken from a gas station bathroom. No, I'm sorry...I'm not going to insult the gas station bathrooms like that! But needless to say, the toilet was nasty! There were cigarette burns/holes in the sheets and the blankets. I had to sleep with the lights on to make sure that I wouldn't wake up with bugs all over me. The air conditioner (along with the old 1970's TV and remote) had missing pieces to it. The tub was nasty and scraped up. I had to lay a towel down to keep my skin from making contact. The breakfast that was served contained warm OJ and apple juice, infant size muffins and the pastry had hair on it! There were two guys that STAYED in front of the hotel like it was a homeless shelter along with a white van! And it wasn't a delivery van! It gave a new meaning to the word HOE- TEL! I would not recommend this hotel to anyone!

“Pleasantly surprised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

A buddy and I were working the "24 Hours of LeMons" race at Charlotte Motor Speedway and needed a place to crash. Since I had Wyndham Rewards points I booked a room for Friday night so we didn't have to drive down at 0 dark 30 and he booked one for Saturday night. We were both pleasantly surprised at the friendliness of the receptionist when we checked in Friday. We were all joking as I filled out the paperwork.

The room wasn't anything special and if one of the grills being off the A/C unit offends you, pass this one by. But it was clean, the bed slept well and it was one of the quietest rooms I've stayed in in a long time. Evidently they put sound deadening in the wall when they built it because we heard a little noise from the hall but nothing through the walls.

When I checked out Saturday morning we asked if we could get the same room for Saturday night and the receptionist checked us in as we waited. Could not believe how little hassle we had.

The good: super friendly staff; good sound deadening; good beds

The not so good: towels were worn out; no internet (I had a full WiFi signal but no connection however it was late and we were tired so I didn't call the desk)

The totally unexpected: the steak house across the street has a wonderful breakfast and they are open Sunday morning!!!

“Very Surprised!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

I stayed at your hotel earlier this month and thought I would write to share my experience.

While it wasn't the fanciest hotel and certainly not updated I found your beds to be the most comfortable I have ever slept in at any hotel. Honest truth.

I also want to give a shout out to Latasha Burns there at the front desk. What a delightful gal and even if the beds had not been comfortable we would have stayed there just because of her personality. We didn't spend a lot of time in our room just a place to shower and sleep and when we go back to NC you can bed we are going to stay at this Super 8 again. Thanks Latasha we will see you again!

Room Tip: If you just need a place to sleep and shower this will do just fine!

“A debit to the Super 8 brand”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2011

I stayed here for 2 nights on what turned out to be a blazing-hot weekend in late July. Had booked in advance over Expedia, with price being a consideration, but also on the strength of the Super 8 brand. On that basis this place was a real disappointment. It appears the employees are trying hard to keep it up, but fighting twin tides of maintenance-budget neglect (the "duct-tape syndrome), and being in a "transitional" neighborhood and with too many of the types of customers that cause the rooms to age much faster. The houses aren't boarded up and there's no Church's Fried Chicken across the street (yet), but you get an uneasy vibe, and it's at roughly the decay stage where a national franchise (other than Church's) would close up shop and decamp. No doubt it wasn't that way when the motel was built, but in sprawler cities like Charlotte and several others the older, closer-in suburbs sometimes slowly change for the worse.

The air conditioners are wall units, which reminded me of places I've stayed at in the Philippines. Maintenance unfortunately reminded me of that as well. In the first room the air-con was better at wetting about a third of the carpet than it was in cooling, so after putting down some towels I decided it wasn't getting better and asked for a different room. To their credit there was no hassle and I moved to another, this time with a newer unit and a grille held on with duct tape (see photo). It was too noisy but at least it worked. The box springs might've benefited from a sham to hide the unappealing-looking yellow stains. Everything felt a bit too lived-in, even when it worked OK. The sink passed the "plunger test" (that's often an early thing to not work in a badly maintained motel), but the bath/shower didn't pass the "bath test" (i.e. would you want to take a bath in it?). At least the curtain didn't smell. Give the bathroom a B- and the TV selection an A-. There's a small outdoor pool in a corner of the parking lot, but with the crowd walking around or driving around the area, it didn't feel totally safe for adults and certainly not for kids. The motel is in a cluster along the side road and next to the interstate; there's a Cookout barbecue place (mostly drive-thru, a bit like Checkers) in front, and the motel's parking lot might get some thru traffic because of the confusing (to the uninitiated) road layout.

There's visible nighttime security (uniformed guard, making rounds). But it's also too easy to see why they need it. Like I said, they do try. But the area's declining, customers aren't the cream of the crop, and Super 8 and Wyndham either need to fish or cut bait. Usually when the location's trending against you the outcome is a sale to non-chain owners, and that's what I'd predict here.

Is it the worst place I've ever stayed? Not even close (Trip Advisor reviewers sometimes get carried away with the superlatives). Then again, in the $50 price range and with the brand name I'd really hoped for better. Within those parameters it's substandard enough to tarnish the brand.
