“Not Recommended”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2007

My boyfriend and I planned on staying in Charlotte, NC for one night after a concert instead of driving 3.5 hours back to our home. After searching on [--], we decided on the Country Hearth Inn because it was reasonably priced, and we didn't need anything fancy for one night.

Upon arrival, the staff was friendly. On our way to our room (all room entrances were located outside), we noticed some people that looked rather sketchy. We didn't want to judge quickly, so we decided to see how things were when we got back from the concert.

The room itself was decent, it did need to be updated, but was fine for one night. The only thing that worried us was that there was paper shoved in the peephole. This told us that certain types of people have stayed there before... if you know what I mean. We still didn't want to judge, so 3 hrs later, after showering and taking a nap, we decided to pack our bags, and if things were bad when we got back late from the concert, we could just go straight to the office.

On our way out to leave for the concert, there were two police cars outside by where the "sketchy people" were staying... not sure if they were the ones involved. At that point we decided to check out. We were very polite and just told the woman at the front desk that it wasn't the hotel itself, but we were just uncomfortable with the situation that was going on. She was not understanding, telling us that it was nothing to worry about, but we insisted on checking out.

So after calling [--](they were great and understood), we went back to the front desk where we turned in our keys. The woman asked if we dirtied up the room where we replied that we just took showers. Her tone changed and she told us that we would have to pay $10 for the housekeepers to go in and clean. We could not believe that she was saying that, and were quite shocked. We refused, and she eventually said nevermind to the $10 after we told her that we WERE planning on staying there for the night, but now we had to drive 3.5 hrs back home.

Fortunately, we stopped at a hampton inn on the way home where the we had a very pleasant stay. We would not recommend the Country Hearth Inn to anyone. Our 3 hour stay there was a waste of our time, and could have potentially been harmful to us.

(Sorry this was so long, but I wanted to explain everything)

“Too scared to stay”

We were looking for an economical place to stay on the way from New Jersey to Atlanta. We saw a coupon in one of the travel magazines you get on the highway and decided to get rooms. When we drove around to the rooms there were people loitering around that looked like they were pimps and drug dealers. We went to the rooms that were very dingy one smelled like smoke even though it was supposed to be nonsmoking. We immediately returned to the office to get a refund. I just was not comfortable with what looked like prostitutes walking around. I would avoid all the hotels at this exit, the whole area looked unsavory.

“Avoid at all cost”

Really bad experience, rooms have stained bathrooms, carpets. Heater wouldnt work and took them hours to fix it. They refused to change the room. The staff who checked me in had really poor communication skills. People walking around in the middle of night talking on cell phone.

“Avoid at All Costs!”

My stay at this hotel began alright but was tarnished very quickly. We checked in on friday october 13th and checked out today, sunday october 15th. I am very unsastisfied with my stay at this particular hotel and the staff itself. We went out friday night to return to a cold room in which the heater only blowed cold air. We thought it just had to warm up but were amazed to find out in morning that it was still blowing cold air. I called the front desk and reported our heater was not working. They sent a staff member over there who said he didn't have heat in his room either. He had to leave the door open for an excessive amount of time to completely remove that heater and replace with another one. Also we had to ask for a iron and ironing board a number of times. The smell in the room was also not pleasant so we had to burn incense every day. With it being race weekend we had to compromise on some things but heat is not one of them. I asked about refunding some of our stay at checkout since we had a whole day and a half of our trip without heat. The wife of the owner simply ignored me the first time so I asked again. She said why didnt we call and informed her we did that is why got whole new heater in room. Her nonchalant and don't care attitude is what made the situation worse. She stated they don't so anything to make up for such an experience and could do nothing about our problem. I would have expected better treatment since we had paid for services. There were three of us so we each feel unsatisfied about this matter.

Giving this place a "Terrible" rating is still over-rating the location. We were told that check-in could occur as early as 10:00 am with rooms being allocated on a "first come-first serve" basis. Reservations had been made months in advance requesting a non-smoking room. To ensure we could get this room type, we were told to arrive early. Upon arrival, we received our non-smoking room complete with malfunctioning air conditioner, moldy bathroom walls, lamp with lightbulbs needing replacement and sticky carpet. We pointed out the problems to the front desk and were told that someone would be by the room to check it out. When the staff personnel arrived at our room, he proceeded to "fix" the a/c by removing the filter from the unit and said "it was slower than the new units and needed more time to cool the room". (FYI: The cover to the a/c unit was not secured and would fall off it you got too close). Since the heat was in the 90's all weekend, we requested to be put in another room with a properly working a/c unit. We were denied and did not have any other lodging choices due to all the hotels being booked for race weekend. The bathroom tub and shower tile/grout were painted over with a white gloss paint but the faucet and shower fixtures were rusty along with the toilet paper holder. The bottoms of the bathroom walls were moldy and had some sort of mold spore pod emerging from the door frame. After a few hours, it erupted leaving spore residue on the floor. The bathmat was stained and you had to keep your shoes on not only in the bathroom but also throughout the entire hotel room. The faucet for the bathroom sink sprayed water toward the back of the sink basin. The refrigerator had a small freezer which was in such need of defrosting that you could not fix anything in it. The ice was literally a few inches thick. The website states there is an olympic size swimming pool. What we found a pool the size of what most people put in their backyard. Also, there is an "inn-credible" breakfast each morning....complete with breakfast items that needed refrigeration to prevent spoiling. The sausage biscuits were sitting in a pan on the counter at room temperature in addition to the waffle batter and cream cheese. I have never encountered a place with as many problems and sanitary issues as this one. The Country Heart Inn on Equipment Drive in Charlotte will only make you want to stay at home next time.
