“Lovely Stay”

I was in Charlotte on business this week and spent two nights in the Dowd Suite. First and foremost, the staff is the greatest asset to the inn. Very warm and friendly, and attentive. The room was gigantic with a wonderful screened porch off the back, two-person marble shower, garden tub, 10 foot ceilings (maybe higher?), flat screen television, wireless internet and there was even a bidet in the bathroom. The bed was very comfortable, and having gone to college in the area, I especially appreciated the Springs Industries linens. Nice touch! The breakfast was great - loved the cheese grits. I enjoyed have a selection of great newspapers in the morning - Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, etc. I will not hesitate to stay at the Duke Mansion for future trips to Charlotte. Glad to see they're members of Select Registry too. I enjoy SR properties very much.

“Needs some TLC”

Our room was on the 2nd floor and was pretty nice but it sort of looked worn out on some of the details. It had some nice touches such as a flat panel TV and internet access. Breakfast was good and they had a wide selection of goodies. We arrived just as an event was about to get underway and it seemed like caos had erupted here. If I were to stay here again, I would make sure that there were no events going on during my stay. The best thing about the Duke Mansion was that the rooms were enormous!

“Needs work”

The location and setting are beutiful BUT...my room as well as that of another guest who arrived at the same time smelled so musty both of us went to the front desk to inquire about air freshener. If you have any allergies do not stay at the Duke Mansion. There was visible mildew around the cold air vent! The carpet in my room was extremely worn as well as the bedspread. The exterior of the mansion had peeling paint and needs work as well.

“Great Time at Duke Mansion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2007

My wife and I stayed at the Duke Mansion for two nights after getting married before we flew out of town for our honeymoon. We stayed in one of the King Bed rooms and loved it. The bed was super comfortable and the staff provided a complimentary bottle of champagne for our big night. The gardens were beautiful and the weather was perfect. I'd recommend guests take advantage of the breakfast they serve. Breakfast is made to order and delicious (I had the three egg omlet, and my wife had the banana stuffed cinnamon french toast). Also, freshly made cookies and drinks are available by the lobby downstairs. Overall we had a great time and will make plans to stay again. Triple A members get 10% off which is good to know. The only real problems with the Duke Mansion is that some areas do look like they need some attention or fixing up. I urge others to keep in mind that this is a historical Charlotte landmark and some wear and tear to the property is not unexpected. Also, the staff was great and very friendly.

“Duke Mansion nice, needs work”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2007

I stayed at the Duke Mansion in July and deeply fell in love with this house.
The mansion, the grounds were beautiful.
But upon closer inspections, there were several details that needed work:
1. The flat sheets on the bed had holes.
2. The screen doors for the sun rooms also had holes.
3. I felt that the place really needed a deep cleaning - more than just light dusting.
4. The flowers in the large arrangement in the main hall were dead.
5. In the outside area near the back garden, there were several items that needed to be put out of sight (i.e. trash cans, ladders, buckets, etc.)
6. The main fountain up front needed to be repaired. I asked if it was a working fountain and I was told that it was broken.
6. I stayed on the third floor. I didn't sleep well because I kept hearing a knocking...

But as a gardener, I really believe that the garden needed the most work. In all fairness to the gardener, it was a super hot weekend in July, but there were several areas that needed work:
1. In the Nesbit garden, I noticed that there was some raised flower beds in the far left area that didn't have flowers.
2. Everything needed to be deadheaded.
3. Flowerpots needed to be watered - badly. The staff could easily do this, as there wasn't much traffic at some points of the day.
4. The lawn needed to be edged up.
5. The hydrangeas all needed water.
6. Fresh mulch (pine bark) needs to be added to the back garden. This garden has the raised beds with the vegetables. Under the magnolia tree, you could see the black landscaping fabric.
7. The vegetables in the raised flower beds were way too large and overgrown. I saw a Zucchini that was at least 30 inches. Also, in the raise herb beds near the house, there were empty spaces without herbs and some weeds.
8. The deep red Dahlias that are located in the courtyard garden need to be re-staked. Their poor heads were drooping badly.
9. The mini-lawn mowing device in the courtyard garden before the Nesbit garden needs to be put away.
10. It would be nice if all of the plants were labeled.
11. An arborist needs to be called out, as some of those wonderful trees may need some specialized attention.

All in all, I enjoyed my stay and would consider staying there again.;.
