“Fantastic facility, but one complaint....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 March 2011

This bed and breakfast is wonderful! The room was perfect and the breakfast was excellent. We were in town for the UNC basketball game and this hotel was easy to get to the Time Warner Arena downtown. Parking was easy and this bed and breakfast has an elevator. We paid $199 a night during the weekend. This location is also close to Southpark Mall. Coffee is available most of the day and one night we were provided "from scratch" peanut butter cookies...they were delicious! My tv was small, but that was ok. Very few outlets for my spouse, who travels with all his gadgets, each requiring electricity. He was the only one complaining! My only complaint came Sunday morning. When I picked up a newspaper in the lobby, there were no coupons inside! I told an employee I was going to switch papers because the coupons were missing. She told me an employee took ALL the coupons from ALL the Sunday papers. I had to buy a paper outside the hotel to get the coupons. All 10 (or so) papers were emptied of coupons! I didn't snitch on the employee but was offended that she took all of them!

“Wonderful suburban romantic getaway”

The Duke Mansion is a lovely inn in a beautiful tree-lined neighbourhood just outside of uptown Charlotte. We stayed for one night for an anniversary getaway and found it to be a great B&B. The room we had was very spacious, with a high ceiling, two sitting chairs, a writing desk. It opened up to a screened-in porch (2nd fl) overlooking the back gardens. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom is large and spacious with a large tub that has the fixtures arranged to supply water only through the shower head. The was not optimal for running bath water, but was adequate for showering. The breakfast was delicious, with a good selection of well-thought out dishes (the frittata was fantastic). All the staff we interacted with were very friendly and helpful.

“This hotel blocks access to several major websites”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2010

The property is gorgeous and welcoming, and the bed was fantastically comfortable, particularly the pillows. The towels were very nice. I didn't find it to be noisy at all. The Asian man who checked us out (didn't catch his name) was extraordinarily friendly and helpful. The residential neighborhood is affluent and attractive. I didn't think our room looked worn down, though it also didn't look like it had been updated recently.

Bad parts:
They use Open DNS to block access to content-sharing websites such as You-Tube, Twitter, and Flickr. The woman at the desk that evening was not aware that the hotel had made this rude and technically incompetent choice and was unable to help. Once we worked around the problem (I travel with a computer wizard) the internet worked perfectly well, but most visitors will not know how to do so.

Our third floor room was a bit dreary. It appears that rooms on the third floor all have only one small window. If I were to return, I would certainly try to get a room on the second floor. This is an old house and I suspect that the third floor was originally the location for the maids' quarters, so you can expect sometimes low ceilings and not a great deal of light.

There is a fitness room but it is very small (stairmaster and maybe a bike) and has no windows. It is on the third floor.

“Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2009

If you appreciate historic architecture and traditional decor, the Duke Mansion is for you. It's like taking a step back in time. It has rooms of varying size and really comfortable beds. I always try to stay in one of the rooms with a screen porch/balcony. Enjoy your coffee on the porch while looking at the amazing craftmanship of the house. They just don't build homes like this anymore.

The complementary hot breakfast is delicious (try the bacon!) and the staff is very helpful and friendly. Plus, any proceeds go towards the preservation of this historic gem, so it makes you feel good about the money you spend on staying at the Duke Mansion.

Don't miss the history of the Mansion on the second floor. It's very interesting. I have met many people from Charlotte who have never discovered this hidden gem. It's tucked away in a quiet neighborhood with amazing walking and running routes through beautiful Myers Park.

“Nice grounds and history was great but cleanliness suffered.”

I stayed at the Duke Mansion for a week on business due to the price and location. It's in the heart of Myers Park which features some of the most beautiful homes in Charlotte, NC. I checked in and my clothes needed to be ironed, so I pulled out the iron and it was broken. I called the front desk to ask for another and one was brought up to the room by the front desk attendant. Not too friendly. Anyway, broken handle on the dresser, caulk needed replacing in the shower due to mold, and you're not going to believe this, but there were spiders and webs in the corners of the room nearest the desk area. This was in a smaller room and not the largest at the property, but there is still no excuse. Also, the wifi was down when I arrived and was told to hardwire the machine to a wall outlet which didn't work either. I had to go to the wireless router on the 3rd floor and reboot it.
