“Fun quasi-camping experience”

We stayed in the cabins at the Camp Wilderness Resort. Highly recommended if you want to camp with the kids, but don't want to lug all the camping gear with you. We have one still in diapers, and I can't imagine having to deal with a tent or camping equipment on top of all the stuff we have to bring for him. The cabins are really nice. When you drive up, the first thing you notice is the big 'ol porch swing and charcoal grill in the front yard. Then, you walk into the living room. There is a flat screen T.V. with a futon and a 4 person table and chairs. The air conditioning unit is to your right. There is a walk-thru kitchen which has most amenities including a m/w and 2 burner stove, but no dishwasher. There are 2 bedrooms including 1 with 2 bunk beds - that's 4 beds for the kids, and a queen bed in the other. It was perfect for our family. We have 3 kids - 6, 5, and 2. The bathrooms have a shower, no tub, but are spacious, modern, and clean. The bathrooms and kitchen were clean, but for some reason, they don't do a great job washing the floors. They were somewhat muddy and there were spider webs in some corners, so it did remind you that you were camping, not in a Ritz Carlton. We wiped things down for the kids, and we were fine as far as the cleanliness. The only other thing I would like to mention to anyone who is listening at the resort.....kids love pasta and mac and cheese. There is no pasta strainer in the kitchen. That was a bit of a pain, and the largest frying pan had a broken handle. You do cook when you have kids, so it would be nice to have the right tools. Other than that, the kids loved the place and the tram was extrememly convenient to the park. The tram accomodates large strollers, makes it's rounds often, and you save on parking, so it's great. The park itself was better than expected as well. The operators are very friendly and the lines aren't very long. The kids had an absolute blast and were already talking about our next visit as we were leaving. Highly recommend the cabins as well as the park. You won't go wrong from either respect. Didn't see any criminal activity anywhere as mentioned in the other review. The campground has 24 hr security and they do have quiet hours at night. We didn't hear any wild parties or anything else going on. The kids did take advantage of the on-site playground and mini golf at the campground. Both were fun. In the lobby, they also have arcade games, a wii with a very large flat screen, and a small grocery store for guests. So, if you're rained in, it appears there are options there as well. Bottom line, our family had a great time and we will return if given the chance.

“Barren field behind Carowinds, next to the junkyard, but close enough to walk to the park”

The resort is actually called Carowind's CAMP Wilderness Resort, not Carowind's FORT Wilderness resort. I visited to check it out for bringing my kids in the future, and have to say that for what I wanted, it wasn't really very impressive. I was looking for a place to do a popup camper, and the area for that is just so, well., it kind of looks like someone took a big barren field and parking lot and said, "hey let's make this into a campground." I opted not to stay overnight and camped elsewhere. Went into the lodge and the staff seemed very helpful, but the popup and tent area is BARREN. It's located adjacent to the scrapyard for the theme park, and they run a shuttle between the park entrance and the campground, but there were teenagers walking the 1/2 mile distance since it is all on Carowinds property. It's just way far in the back tucked away and isolated, but not in a good way. They also had private cabins which look nice and the forums people say are enjoyable, but I wouldn't be in big rush to tent camp or popup camp there. Just not very attractive. The sites were TINY to set up tents or park a popup. I don't know how you'd fit both a car and a popup on a single site. The sites on the corners are REALLY poorly situated, so avoid those.
They have a pool for warmer months, but it was April and closed. The sand volleyball court and minigolf looked like nobody had paid attention to them in years. For the price, I would expect nicer. You're paying for the location basically.
The forums say the motels across the street aren't very safe with criminal activity, so I guess this is a better option than that. It's far enough away removed from the motel area, but there's not any secruity gate or anything . It was a bit hard to find, back behind the administrative offices and the junkyard with leftover roller coaster parts, discarded lumber, etc.
It needs some TLC and to thin out the number of campsites to get my thumbs up. Season pass holders, which I am, get a discount, but for the money in summer season, I'd rather spend that same amount and do a priceline hotel elsewhere in Charlotte.
Since I didn't remain overnight, I can't comment on noise, customer service, etc.
