“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

The service at this hotel was superb. Our room was large, clean and comfortable, and we really felt well taken care of. Sitting by the fireplace in the lobby in the evening, with a glass of wine and an hors d'oeuvre, listening the the pianist and reading a book picked up at the local used book store, was an experience I frequently recall during more hectic hours back home. If we ever have a chance to visit Chapel Hill again, we will stay at the Siena. In fact, we might schedule another trip just so that we can stay there again. It's that nice.

“Great Boutique Hotel - Good Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

This is a great boutique hotel and our rate was a great value. The lobby is tastefully decorated, and the rooms are large and beautifully appointed. It has the feel of a carefully decorated hotel, not a corporate chain. Elegant and large bathrooms. Really nice.

This is a boutique hotel, not a resort, so there's not much there outside the lobby and rooms, which is great. They know what they're trying to do and they do it well. The staff was really nice, as well.

The only drawback to the hotel is the location - which is not bad but just incongruous. The hotel sits between two off-brand gas stations on a commercial strip about two miles down the road from the UNC campus. Easy access to campus with their shuttle, but not right next door. Our rate here was much better than at the Carolinian, which I suspect is due to location, and we were happy paying less for such a great hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the back woods, since this section of Franklin Street isn't worth a view.

“Nice hotel but for a couple of things”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

Stayed there last weekend after a UNC basketball game with my wife and kids. Certainly a splurge for us to stay there, but I wanted us to have a couple of extras since it was a family weekend. Check in was easy and hotel has a nice appearance. When it was time to go to bed, my daughter was not feeling well, so we asked for a cot for my son to sleep separate from her. They brought one soon after and it was comfortable for a rollaway.

Due to the temperate weather, we didn't realize until we had gone to bed that the AC was not blowing cold. I don't know if it was because it was January, but only the heat would work, not the AC. It was too late in the evening and with our stuff spread out, we were not up to moving rooms. Our room was warm and stuffy. We ended up having to open the balcony door for the night, which increased the traffic noise dramaticially.

Heading home after only fair night's sleep, I was still ok with everything until I had one final surprise. At no point until checkout did they tell us they were charging us $15 for the use of the rollaway. At check out, the representative asked me if I wanted the incidental charges to remain on my card. Only when I asked did he tell me what the charge was for. I found the front desk person to be somewhat patronizing and unapologetic. This caused me to unfortunately leave with a less than pleasant taste of the Siena.

Brian Deimling, Front Office Manager at The Siena Hotel, responded to this review
17 January 2012
Thank you for taking time to leave feedback on your recent visit to Chapel Hill and The Siena Hotel. I am glad that your weekend started off on a good note with your smooth check-in. I am deeply saddened to hear that the rest of the weekend was less than satisfactory. We all take great pride in creating a great guest experience.

I am sorry to hear that the AC was not functioning in your room which caused you to have an unpleasant rest. Our engineering manager was notified upon your review and everything seems to be in working order. As for the rollaway charge, that is something that should have been communicated upon request and I apologize that it wasn’t. I have gone ahead and met with the front office team in stressing the importance of clearly communicating fees. With all of the complimentary services from wireless internet and local transportation, we definitely don’t want our guests feeling that we are “nickeling and diming” them when don’t communicate a fee for certain services.

Again, I am sorry that you didn’t have a wonderful experience and I implore you to stay with us again on your next visit so we can show you what The Siena service is suppose to look like.

Sincerely,

Brian S Deimling

“Forget the cookie cutter hotels in Chapel Hill and stay here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

We had planned to stay in Raleigh but were not impressed with the city or the overpriced hotels, seriously expensive! So, we got back in the car and headed to Chapel Hill. We were so lucky to find the Siena. This place is just beautiful, very European. The staff and service was outstanding. We were shown three rooms and got to choose, difficult because they were all special..all were spacious with sitting areas, antique furnishings, lovely artwork, and bathrooms that were just redone with granite counter tops. Very snazzy. Loved the staff, just waiting to serve us in any way they could. Found us live music for the evening, drove us there and picked us up,we never moved the car. Has room service, a bar in the lobby, resturant attatched, breakfast was great, I think it was included in the very reasonable rate. I have traveled more than most in my life, all over and this hotel is one of my new favorites. Check it out! Thanks to all the staff there, you spoiled us.

Room Tip: No worries, we saw three and got to choose.

“A perfect anniversary night of food and comfort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

We spent our anniversary at the hotel last Sunday night and had a delightful stay. We decided at the last minute that we wanted a special night out and decided that an overnight stay at a very nice hotel and dinner at an excellent restaurant was in order. Since we love Chapel Hill, we looked that Carolina Inn, The Franklin, and The Sienna. Despite several previous satisfying stays and dinners at the Carolina Inn we decided to try The Sienna…and we are lucky we made this choice. We stayed on their Date Night package which cost $180 plus taxes and includes a $100 voucher to Il Palio restaurant in the hotel, an appetizer and drink in the bar worth $30 (not including tip and tax), and breakfast buffet for 2 (a $15 or so value). Bottom line was the room cost us about $55 including tax, and we had great food and a romantic environment to boot!

We stayed in Room 423 which was a large king in the back corner on the top floor. It was very spacious with a comfy king bed. It was quiet except for the 6am dumpster pickup next door on the Monday morning. In-room coffee and tea with the k-cups was nice as were the general amenities.

The lobby bar was very nice and service for our package-included drinks and appetizer (great cheese plate) was excellent. We dined that evening in Il Palio and certainly believe it deserves its 4 diamond AAA rating (the only Italian restaurant in NC with that rating). We had a bottle of chianti, and each had a delicious beet salad and appetizer-sized pasta dish. We walked out owing nothing beyond our $100 voucher (which covered our tax and tip). The food was delicious and the service was impeccable!

On Monday morning, our USA Today paper was in the room and the breakfast buffet (fresh fruit, yogurt, vegetable frittata, oatmeal, and breads/pastries) awaited in the Il Palio. Once again the service and food was great, and we only incurred a tip to our very nice waitperson.

Bottom line for us was a wonderful stay and an excellent facility with an even more excellent package pricing deal.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back if you want quiet but ask for the front if you want to watch Franklin St
